Edmilson Silva Costa (born 8 April 1950 in Pedreiras) is a Brazilian economist, college professor and politician affiliated to the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB), serving as the party General Secretary. He is a Doctor of Economics at the State University of Campinas.
Biography
Edmilson Costa is member of the Communist Party since the 1970s. In 1974, he became Bachelor of Social Communication at the Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA) and began to work as journalist and, also, as political militant.
As political militant in the 1980s, he contributed with the newspaper Voz da Unidade (Voice of the Unity), main communication vehicle of the Communist Party, writing articles and opinions about the country's reality under the eyes of the Marxism.
In 1992, after defending the thesis A Política Salarial no Brasil, 1964-1985: 21 anos de arrocho salarial e acumulação predatória (The Wage Policy in Brazil, 1964-1985: 21 years of wage squeeze and predatory accumulation),[1] under the supervision of Waldir da Silva Quadros, professor of Economist at the State University of Campinas, he became Doctor of Economist at Unicamp.
After the split occurred in the party in 1992, he became one of the main people in the called process of Revolutionary Reconstruction of PCB.
He is member of the National Political Commission of the party since 2001 and had served as Secretary of International Affairs and Political Secretary of PCB in São Paulo until 2016.
He was candidate for Mayor of São Paulo for the Communist Party in 2008.[2]
On 26 April 2010, Costa was announced as candidate for Vice President of Brazil in the 2010 elections, along with then-General Secretary Ivan Pinheiro.[3]
On 17 October 2016, he became General Secretary of the Brazilian Communist Party, replacing Ivan Pinheiro.[4][5]
Besides being a party leader, Costa is director of research and graduation of Caio Prado Junior Institute and college professor in some private institutions.
