Wikipedia:Requests for comment/User names

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Ryan Postlethwaite (talk | contribs) at 23:04, 28 February 2007 ({{User|Wikislut}}: Close obvious disallow, user blocked on AIV). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

This page is for bringing attention to usernames which may be in violation of Wikipedia's username policy. Before listing a username here, consider if it should be more appropriately reported elsewhere, or if it needs to be reported at all:

Do NOT post here if:

  • the user in question has made no recent edits.
  • you wish to have the block of a user reviewed. Instead, discuss the block with the blocking administrator (see also Wikipedia:Blocking policy § Unblocking).

Before adding a name here you MUST ensure that the user in question:

  • has been warned about their username (with e.g. {{subst:uw-username}}) and has been allowed time to address the concern on their user talk page.
  • has disagreed with the concern, refused to change their username and/or continued to edit without replying to the warning.
  • is not already blocked.

If, after having followed all the steps above, you still believe the username violates Wikipedia's username policy, you may list it here with an explanation of which part of the username policy you think has been violated. After posting, please alert the user of the discussion (with e.g. {{subst:UsernameDiscussion}}). You may also invite others who have expressed concern about the username to comment on the discussion by use of this template.

Add new requests below, using the syntax {{subst:rfcn1|username|2=reason ~~~~}}.

Tools: Special:ListUsers, Special:BlockList

Note. On past precedent, this discussion is taking place at WT:CHU/U. A user has requested to usurp this username but there is a concern that it violates username policy because it is a username "mentioning or referring to illnesses, disabilities, or conditions". Please comment there. WjBscribe 09:48, 27 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I caught this user creating the page The MySpace Poet Society, which I have set for speedy deletion. This name contains the word "Myspace." What should be done? Acalamari 19:51, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

i moderate the myspace poet society on myspace. that's why i used themyspacepoetsociety as a username and was attempting to create "The MySpace Poet Society Page" here on wikipedia. Since the site opened last January, it has become a very popular place, with over 2500 members and double the amount in friends. it's hosted on myspace, so of course it's free and just a large support system for myspace poets. i didn't realize it would cause a problem.

In that case, your name will likely be blocked due to the fact it's name after a website then. Acalamari 20:12, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

ok, that does make sense. thanks...making the site in general on wikipedia would probably be a problem because it has the same name in the title then, right?Themyspacepoetsociety 20:27, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is more that we don't allow names that promote a website. Also, you may wish to read out conflict of interest guidelines. It is generally not a good idea to make an encyclopedic article about something you are directly involved in. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 20:48, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
WP:COI primarily applies to commercial interests. Otherwise, a botanist couldn't write about botany.Rlevse 21:53, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
