Wikipedia:Requests for comment/User names

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Deiz (talk | contribs) at 11:02, 25 January 2007 (close, allow - no consensus to disallow. by all means keep an eye on edits). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

If you believe someone has chosen an inappropriate username under Wikipedia's username policy, you may list it here. However, before listing the user here, please consider contacting the user on his or her talk page and bring their attention to the problem and Wikipedia:Changing username. Names that are offensive, inflammatory, impersonating an existing user, or asserting inappropriate authority will generally be permanently blocked by admins.

Be aware that usernames are subject to specific criteria which differ from controls and guidelines regarding other forms of self-expression on Wikipedia. Please ensure you are familiar with the username policy before commenting on a username.

This page is for bringing attention to usernames which may be in violation of Wikipedia's username policy. Before listing a username here, consider if it should be more appropriately reported elsewhere, or if it needs to be reported at all:

Do NOT post here if:

  • the user in question has made no recent edits.
  • you wish to have the block of a user reviewed. Instead, discuss the block with the blocking administrator (see also Wikipedia:Blocking policy § Unblocking).

Before adding a name here you MUST ensure that the user in question:

  • has been warned about their username (with e.g. {{subst:uw-username}}) and has been allowed time to address the concern on their user talk page.
  • has disagreed with the concern, refused to change their username and/or continued to edit without replying to the warning.
  • is not already blocked.

If, after having followed all the steps above, you still believe the username violates Wikipedia's username policy, you may list it here with an explanation of which part of the username policy you think has been violated. After posting, please alert the user of the discussion (with e.g. {{subst:UsernameDiscussion}}). You may also invite others who have expressed concern about the username to comment on the discussion by use of this template.

Add new requests below, using the syntax {{subst:rfcn1|username|2=reason ~~~~}}.

User name contains Japanese characters, which would make it near immpossible to access their user/talk page if it weren't for the redirects (User:Yamaguchi and User talk:Yamaguchi). They seem to be a well-meaning user by doing things such as reverting vandalism, but my computer has been messed up lately so I can't check their edits without it freezing every two minutes. // PoeticDecay 00:00, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: Names with non-Latin characters were deprecated for a long time but I recently saw a discussion indicating that we have to learn to live with them in view of an impending introduction of "single log-in" in which users will have a single username across all Wikimedia projects. I know there is a centralized discussion of how issues of how to access these names, how links are handled, what to do with browsers that just show the characters as boxes, etc., will be addressed, but I can't quickly find it right now. There would be no point in requiring a username change if a few weeks from now the editor could change it back again anyway. Newyorkbrad 00:52, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Allow. I don't know a word of Japanese, but I have no problem accessing his user/talk pages simply by cutting and pasting the links. Besides, this isn't the first, or the second, or the third time this has been discussed, and yet he is still here. Reswobslc 02:49, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Allow For the umpteenth time... we are not going to force a user who's been a valid contributor for almost two years... (a year longer than the proposer I might add) to comply with rules regarding names passed AFTER he joined. Screw this whole ex posto facto crap...  ALKIVAR 02:59, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Allow per the above. Long time contributer who predates non-Latin rule, which is now in the process of being deprecated due to single-user login. Seriously. --Myles Long 03:08, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Allow per Alkivar.--Wizardman 05:03, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Allow User predates the rule, and may very well outlive it. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 05:40, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Allow - because of grandfather clause. He's the only regular this is a real problem with - better not to pick one's fight over this case. Patstuarttalk|edits 05:47, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Comment While we're at it, why don't we take the opportunity to learn a couple new characters (for those whose machines display them)? They look easy and apparently they are both in the list of 80 characters taught to Japanese first-grade children. I believe the characters say "Sensei" and it means "teacher" (wiktionary:Sensei) Read it "Yamaguchi sensei" and it won't seem so bad. Like I said before, I don't speak Japanese, but for one guy who's been here two years, learning two whole characters taught to 6-year-olds can't be all that hard! This seems like a "duh!" case, but the user appears to have been around for a while, so not sure what to do... I'm thinking disallow, "is the sex" is a little "inflammatory"... Cbrown1023 00:49, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Names containing 666

I've noticed a few names with 666 in them recently. WP:USERNAME doesn't specifically address this issue. Examples in the last hour include Hellboy666 (talk · contribs), Shademaster666 (talk · contribs), Mania666 (talk · contribs), J (V)an666 (talk · contribs), and Nasci666 (talk · contribs). In Christian eschatology, 666 is considered the number of Satan, and thus could be considered the "name of a religious figure". --BigDT 03:25, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Username is illegible in English: (google translator translates it as consumer (?): [1]). This username would get mixed up with any other Arabic username; it's impossible to type it in; and worse, the text reads right to left, which makes it nearly impossible to navigate around (you should have seen how long it took me to type it into the subject/headline bar). No reason user couldn't come up with better/more Latin characters for username. Patstuarttalk|edits 05:51, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
