Kiev Governorate (Russian: Киевская губерния) was an administrative unit (Guberniya) of the Russian Empire and, briefly, of Soviet Ukraine. The city of Kiev was the capital of this Governorate.
The Kiev Governorate formed in 1708 was preceded by the Kiev Regiment (polk). From 1781 to 1796 it was briefly transformed to the eponymous Namesnichestvo (viceroyalty) and since 1796, again as guberniya it existed with minor border adjustments till the collapse of the Russian Empire.
In Soviet Ukraine the Kiev Guberniya existed until 1925 when it was transformed Okrug, briefly, and finally in 1932 into a Kiev Oblast in the course of the Soviet administrative reform.
