Cast

Story

Mausam, a love story in its first season start with mere adolescent attraction between a Punjabi boy Harry, and a Kashmiri girl Aayat, in a small village of Punjab. It develops into young love between them in season two. Their love realizes its own depth in the hours of separation through season three. In the fourth and final season their love culminates into togetherness. But not before sacrificing a lot personally and learning the truth behind universal love. It is a passionate love story which sees, as its background various shades of life, questioning us and yet not becoming indulgent.

Release

Mausam released across 2,000 plus screens worldwide with a combination of prints and digital screens.[4]

Critical reception

Mausam's cinematography and performance from lead actor Shahid Kapoor have been praised [5] , but the film received mixed to positive reviews. Zee News bureau gave it 4 stars saying "‘Mausam’ can be best described as a wonderful blend of offbeat and mainstream cinema which is full of charm, elegance and vivacity."[6] Bollycurry gave the film 4 stars out of 5 praising Pankaj Kapur's direction and saying "In his directorial debut, he tells an old-fashioned story of love, separation and reunion with flourishes and flashes of great cinema igniting what would in lesser hands, appear to be a trite tale of love gone frightfully cliched."[7] Nikhat Kazmi of Times Of India rated it three out of five saying "The film tries to strike a balance between art and mainstream cinema and succeeds partially." [8] Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV gave it it 3 stars out of 5. [9] Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama gave the film 2 stars out of 5, saying that,"On the whole, Mausam is a colossal disappointment!" but praises the Shahid Kapoor's performance saying "Shahid gives his all to this role, submitting himself to his director-father to mould him the way he chooses to. It won't be erroneous to state that Shahid surpasses all his previous performances, including the one in Kaminey, with this film. The film also marks the coming of age of this actor."[10] Rishitu Amarnani of India Forums was also not very impressed with the film giving it 2 out of 5 stars. He says, "Mausam is a visual treat. It’s one of the best looking films Bollywood has produced in the recent years. But it's one of those mausam’s which might look beautiful from the outside, but once you get into that space, you realize what a big nuisance it actually is! It’s the biggest disappointment of 2011!" [11] Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN, was also not kind to Mausam. He rated it 2 out of 5, saying, "Director Pankaj Kapur infuses his story and his characters with a delicate, old-fashioned charm that is pleasing and quaint at first, but gets progressively exhausting when logic goes out of the window" [12]

Box office

The film has grossed Rs. 41 crore in its opening weekend (not nett gross) with Rs. 33.5 crore in India (nett collection: Rs. 23.5 crore) and Rs. 7.5 crore from overseas markets.[13]. As it only collected 28 crore (US$3.4 million) nett in its first week and saw a huge drop on its 8th day and ended its lifetime collections with 52 crore net[14], The film was a box office hit in india.[15]

Reception

The album received all over postive reviews from critics. Joginder Tuteja from Bollywood Hungama gave it 4 out of 5 stars and said: "Mausam is a fantastic album and has all the ingredients that make for a popular soundtrack. While 'Sajh Dhaj Ke' and 'Mallo Malli' are the pick of the lot when it comes to instant chartbusters in the making, 'Rabba Main Toh Mar Gaya Oye' and 'Ik Tu Hi Tu Hi' are good enough to enjoy a rather extended shelf life. Just pick this one up!"[16] Planet Bollywood stated: "The soundtrack of Mausam came with humungous expectations and ends up fulfilling the expectations of not just music connoisseurs, but also the lovers of pumped up and universally appealing music. (...) Overall the album is strongly recommended for adding to your music collection as soon as possible!"[17] Rumnique Nannar of Bollyspice gave it 4 out of 5 stars, stating: The soundtrack to Mausam is one of the best Pritam soundtracks in a long while and hits back at all his detractors by showing what he is capable of. The soundtrack mixes both music the masses will love and music connoisseurs too; in short, it is a glorious return for Pritam! There is no real sore track in this album as the situational tracks are equally created with care, there is something for everyone to love on this album. An absolute must listen."[18]

Controversy

The film was in legal trouble in early August 2010, when Pankaj's old friend and former colleague Nawman Malik claimed that the title Mausam is registered under his name and filed a complaint with the Association of Motion Pictures and TV Programme Producers. He was also claiming that the story of Mausam is his. Now, Mallik has moved the Mumbai High Court asking for an injunction against producer Sheetal Talwar and director Pankaj Kapur for using the title. He has demanded a compensation of Rs 1 crore for the title and has even submitted a digital film called Mausam, which he claims he made.[19]

In September, the film was also denied submission for censorship because the Air Force has objected to a 30 second long aerial action sequence with Shahid Kapoor who plays an Air Force pilot in Mausam. Special permission had been sought and granted to shoot in a real airbase. The Air Force were objecting to a dramatic action fight sequence with Shahid on board a Mirage fighter plane. Mausam producer Sheetal Talwar announced: "We had the script cleared by the Air Force on August 23, 2010. Now suddenly they're objecting to a sequence after it's been shot, edited and the film was ready for censoring?"[20]
