The Independent University of Moscow (IUM) (Russian: Независимый Московский Университет (НМУ), Nezavisimy Moskovski Universitet) is a small educational organisation with rather informal status located in Moscow, Russia. It was organized in 1991 by a group of prominent Russian mathematicians with Vladimir Arnold (chairman) and Sergei Novikov among them. It includes a mathematics and a theoretical physics department and a post-graduate school. Anyone can attend lectures and seminars and become a student after taking 3 exams. IUM is the only non-state college for preparation of professional mathematicians.
