Hazira is a Municipal Town and a transshipment port in the Surat district in the state of Gujarat in northwestern India.

Hazira Industries

Hazira is one of the major ports of India and comes under Surat Metropolitan Region. The town is located on the bank of the Tapti River, eight kiometres from the Arabian Sea. It is a centre for health tourism due to its natural springs, and also home to major industrial and shipping facilities like Essar Group of Industries, Shell, Larsen & Toubro & Reliance.

Transport

Hazira is 230 kilometres north of Mumbai, 21 kilometres from Surat city and 31 kilometres from Udhana. Access is via NH-6 and NH-8. A new coastal highway connecting Hazira with Navsari which will reduce the commute time has been planned. The project to broaden NH-6 from four to six lanes is under consideration with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

Port

Hazira Port is a deep-water LNG terminal and multi-cargo port. The LNG terminal is operational and India's largest, with storage and export capacity of 2.5 million tonnes. It is a joint venture between Shell Oil and French company Total S.A.[1] Storage and export capacity is intended to be increased to 3.8 million tonnes by the end of 2009.[1]

A container terminal capable of handling one million TEU is also currently under construction by Singapore company PSA Corporation.[1]
