The University of Mindanao was established in 1946 and is one of the oldest universities in Southern Philippines. It is a non-sectarian school offering the most number of academic programs in this part of the country.[1] It is located in Davao City.

The University of Mindanao has ten branches spread over thirteen campuses in Southern Mindanao. It has a total student population of 29,765 (SY 2007-08). It is the largest private university in Mindanao with the most number of PACUCOA accredited programs in the country today.[2]

Goal

To achieve its mission, the University aims to:

  • Offer academic programs that meet the changing national and international community needs;"5".
  • Produce graduates who are competent leaders and productive members of society;"6".
  • Harness a pool of ethical, qualified and highly-trained human resources;"7".
  • Provide an academic environment conductive to optimum learning through adequate state-of-the-art facilities;"8".
  • Conduct researches and other scholarly activities that generate new knowledge and contribute to improvement of the quality of life for all;"9".
  • Engage in community services that foster self-reliance and empowerment among the marginalized community;"10". and
  • Lead in the promotion and preservation of the cultural heritage of Mindanao and of the country as a whole."11".

Academic Programs

The University of Mindanao has more than 10 colleges and school located in three campuses. The Colleges of Business Administration, Accountancy, Criminology and Law and the Graduate School located in Bolton Campus. The Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Nursing, Engineering, Architecture, Education and Forestry located in Matina Campus. The Technical and Vocational Courses located in Bangoy Campus. Each college is supervised by Dean and Program Heads/Instructor Coordinator.

Most of its academic programs are accredited by the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA) and the Federation of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippines (FAAP)."31". Its Electrical Engineering is the first in the country granted Level III Reaccredited Status. Level III status is the highest accreditation granted by PACUCOA—a seal of excellence and quality in a given academic program."32". Its Architecture Program is the first in the country to be granted Level I Accreditation."33". UM is the first PACUCOA school in Mindanao granted Level III for various academic programs and one of the top five (5) schools in the Philippines with the most number of accreditation."34".

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has granted Center of Development (COD) to its various academic programs, having the most number of CODs in Mindanao. These programs are Business Administration, Information Technology, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering.

The official student publication of the university is Evolution or Evo for brevity. Its predecessor, the Mindanao Collegian, has been producing top-caliber editors, journalists and columnists in the entire region.
