Archiving policy

I will remove discussions on here that I feel are done with when I feel like it. I will mark such changes with the following summary:'''archiving''' (see history if you want to put stuff back) If you object, or feel that I've removed stuff I shouldn't, feel free to re-add it from the history. If you then comment on it mentioning that I've removed it, and asking me not to, I won't remove it again. If that kind of stuff gets beyond 32k, I'll move it to archive page(s), each of about 32k in size, and put links to them here. JesseW 09:43, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)

The actual page

HHGG

You've added a link to the inexistent article about your upcoming website. You shouldn't have done that, because:

  1. Do not add references unless something is done.
  2. Your site should only be included as an article if it was REALLY important and relevant.
  3. You shouldn't make it an external link either, for the above reasons.
  4. Wikipedia is NOT a web guide. Don't promote your websites here

Kieff, thanks for being so vigilant, however you are in error about some things:
  • The Index is not my website, nor is it created by me.
  • It is a very useful tool for fans of HHGttG, and quite relevant to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy page.
  • I have recieved permission from the author for it to be under GFDL, thereby ready for the Wikipedia.
  • Having the Index on Wikipedia will allow it to be updated, it will allow editors to add new entries, and it will allow editors with different editions of the book to add information about their edition to the index.
That is why I felt that it would be both encyclopedic, and generally useful.
Regarding creating a reference before creating the page, I had understood that I should create the reference first, rather than creating an orphaned page, and then linking it to related pages. If I misunderstood, I am sorry.
Finally, Kieff, please sign your comments on talk pages, especially if you are telling someone off.
Sorry about the signature, guess I forgot. About the page, if you really think it's a REALLY relevant link, you can add it, but it'll be verified later (and someone will probably come up with the same thing I did). But if it's like that, we should probably include MJ Simpson's Planet Magrathea site on the external links. Kieff | Talk 05:59, Oct 2, 2004 (UTC)
Since I'm waiting for a final conformation regarding GFDL status for the Index, I added it as an External Link in the meantime. I also added Planet Magrathea, as you suggested. ;-) What did you mean "verified later (and someone will probably come up with the same thing I did)"? I'm sure other editors will look at the changes and some may fall into the same misunderstandings as you did, but, AFAIK there is no "verification", just many eyes. Thanks again for your vigilance. JesseW 06:17, 2 Oct 2004 (UTC)
When webpages are linked to in Wikipedia, people usually check how relevant it is (using Google or Alexa ranks and such), and see if the addition of it in Wikipedia is or is not needed~, or if it is some sort of self promotion and etc. Kieff | Talk 06:43, Oct 2, 2004 (UTC)

Thank you for your kind words. Cleaning neglected areas of the Wikipedia (like this one) produces a satisfaction not unlike that of cleaning a very dirty room. Updated DYK query Did you know? has been updated. A fact from the article California Certified Organic Farmers, which you recently created, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently-created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

doNextItem() in monobook.js not working in Opera

Hi JesseW.... Just wanted to let you know, in case you didn't already, that the latest version of your monobook.js (dated 20:11, 1 August 2005) doesn't seem to work in Opera — that is, unless I'm doing something wrong, which won't be the first time :) . I'm using the latest version, Opera 8.02 for Windows, en-US. Everything works fine in Firefox & IE, though.

I think the problem's somewhere in doNextItem(). I was able to get it to work if I commented it out & any references to it. I don't know enough javascript to nail it down any further, though (which is why I'm trying to use your monobook.js instead of writing my own :) ). Here's the exact error message that's showing up on my javascript console:

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Gsp/monobook.js&action=submit
Event thread: BeforeScript
Syntax error while loading: line 5 of inline script at http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Gsp/monobook.js&action=submit :
ocation=oldone+"&basepage="+escape(baseul)}; if (/basepage=/
---------------------------------------------------^

It stops there, and nothing else from monoscript.js works. I made sure all my javascript settings were on in Opera, but the error keeps showing up. I have heard, though, that Opera is more strict at parsing javascript code than other browsers :( .

If you happen to have any spare time to fix it, that'd be great. And if you need any more details, let me know. Thanks! -- Gsp 09:36, 2 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, JesseW. Sorry, I don't use IRC. I did try your suggestion, but I got the same error. :( -- Gsp 21:06, 2 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Why...

...Thank you! A Reedie! I don't think I've ever met one on Wikipedia before now. And what's this "ex" stuff? Not anything serious is it? Perhaps we'll meet this year :) Nice to be noticed (as long as I wasn't doing something stupid), so it was kind of you to leave a note. I guess I want people to get this user-page-off-limits taboo out of their systems, I mean it's a wiki, right? So what was I gonna... hey! how did you just leave me a message when I was in the middle of writing you? Anyway... funnily enough Image:San_Francisco_Bay_Area_Skyline_Blvd.jpg was my computer wallpaper, reminds me of home. Well, thanks, and oh no, Daily Show's on already. Admin?

Greetings! You always pop up on my watchlist doing helpful admin-type things, but as I recall you're not an admin. Would you be interested? (If so, do you have any terrible dirty laundry a potential nominator ought to know about? I didn't find any myself. :-)) Mindspillage (spill yours?) 01:50, 25 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be honnored. I've been irritated by not being able to fix the backlog on WP:CP. As for dirty laundry, I don't think so. My basic principle on the wiki is pretty strong eventualism - i.e. I avoide controversial topics 98% of the time. Thanks very much for thinking of me. JesseW 02:00, 25 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Response to your reply of my question

I thought I would bring this here, saves people reading a whole essay. I answer your question by saying "the smarter the person, the more questions they ask". Its always been a good guage as far as I can tell. Second, I appreciate when people take the trouble to find out what the correct answer is. There are a few admins who are extremely liberal with their right to act somewhat arbitrarily. Lastly, I am extremely satisfied with your responses, and I plan to include this part, at least, to the dialogue we have engaged in over at the RfA page. I think you'll do a good job as an admin. And for the record, I have no "political" agenda to push concerning inclusionism, deletionism, whatever. I just want to see WP become a better source of information. More complete, but without becoming cluttered with nonsense. As I have been saying on these RfA pages recently, an administrators first duty is to the Wikipedia, and secondarily, to the community itself. Good luck with your bid. I plan to support your nomination. Thanks for prodding me a bit too, it shows your not afraid to confront a situation with intelligence and resolution. Oh, and I don't think you ever told me why you left (if it's not too personal), but is there any chance of your returning? I think it be fun to see a Wikipedian in real life... Also, I'm glad you've taken up CP help. I have to admit I've always shied away from it because it takes so friggin' long for my computer to load it (just like the WP:TL is unmanageable). User:Ingoolemo/Threads/05/9/14a

You wrote (on my talk page): You tagged Mike Kinkella as nn-bio, CSD A7. I do no think it fits that criterion. The article made multiple claims of notability, such as MVP, records, etc. There were for Arena Football, which is a minor sport, but I think it needs to go through AfD, maybe, but not speedy. Just wanted to let you know. JesseW, the juggling janitor 20:09, 15 September 2005 (UTC)

From the article I was under the impresion that arena football was a strictly high-school level sport. i don't think that HS sport records are generally claims of notability. On looking furher, this seems not to be the case. I do think the person is non-notable but let this go through AfD. Note also that this seems to be a recreation after a prior deletion, but let that go too, as I think that was also an nn-bio speedy. I trust you have placed this on AfD already. DES (talk) 20:19, 15 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure weather or not he is non-notable, so I don't think I would be able to make much of AfD case. Would you list the page? JesseW, the juggling janitor 20:26, 15 September 2005 (UTC)
I did. For future reference if you remove an nn-bio tag because you think a claim of notability is present, please list the page on AfD. You can say something like "User:misguidedEditor tagged this for speedy deltion. i think the person is noteable (or i'm unsure if the person is notable) so I remved the tag and i am listing it here instead. Keep." (or vote abstain or delete as you think the case warrents). Thank you. DES (talk) 20:40, 15 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Recent speedy deletion restorations

Dear JesseW: I was recently going through the logs and noticed that you resurrected a number of nonsense articles from the dead (including Rowan Burns, Old Apps, Anthony G. Collins, Keith gibson etc.) and I thought I would ask you why you did so. Although a couple should have gone through AfD the majority appear, at least to me, to match the speedy criteria. Would you be so kind ask to explain why these articles should be kept? Thank you :-) Best regards, --NicholasTurnbull 18:14, 17 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be happy to explain. I am in the process of reviewing the speedy deletions of User:Jondel, as I noticed that he used the non-CSD reason "non notable". This is not a speedy criterion. E also speedied many without any specific reason at all. I will be speeding some of the ones, and listing the others on AfD. I've done about 14 already (see today's AfD log), and some look like they will be kept, while other's have already been speedied. I think it is important to make sure the CSDs are followed. If you have any further questions, please let me know. JesseW, the juggling janitor 19:33, 17 September 2005 (UTC)
Some of the articles that were restored were IMO obviously useless. I see no reason to clutter Afd with them. On the other hand, some of them were things that IMO should definitely have gone through Afd. Friday (talk) 21:36, 17 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I know. It was hard to tell with some of them, as there was no criteria used. Sorry for the bother; which ones did you specifically think of? JesseW, the juggling janitor 22:01, 17 September 2005 (UTC)

Hi, I tried your view diff since your last change bookmarklet listed at WP:Tools, but I couldn't get it to work. Right now it's just showing me the diff of the last change made to the page. I seem to remember reading somewhere that in the conversion to 1.5 that they slightly changed the formatting of the history page, and I'm thinking that might have something to do with it. It could be that it's working for you and I've just been using it wrong. Let me know. Thanks! -- Norvy (talk) 05:48, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thailand map

Thanks for your message.

First of all, I am very sorry about the loss of the image you made. That is a shame, and I hope and intend to try to get it back from a mirror or other source. However, I am still confused by the specifics of the case. What map at History of Thailand? Looking (partially) through the history, I can't see any map.
That's because it has been deleted.
Besides Image:Thailand.gif, I did find Image:Ac.watarun.jpg, which was uploaded by Adam Carr (with no tags in the edit summary or the image description page) on 12:45, 10 September 2004, but that was captioned as "Siamese warrior figures at the 18th century Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) in Bangkok, erected by King Taksin the Great in 1769", which doesn't sound like a map.
No, that was a photo, which has also been deleted, even though I took it myself
I looked through the various sub articles of History of Thailand, thinking it might be there, but, I found no map in the current versions. (Maybe it has been removed)
Very observant
It would be very helpful if you could provide us with a file name, or a revision where it was present.

To make sure that no others of your uploaded images get deleted, I would suggest you review the log of your uploads. Just glancing over it, I notice Image:Skybush.jpg, Image:Foxsmall.jpg, Image:Portcullis black.gif, and Image:Rectitude.jpg(which is a really nice image) all have no source or license info.

Those images were not uploaded with the intention of putting them at articles. Skybush is at my Talk page, portcullis was for a project which I abandoned, rectitude was sent to someone else. I don't know what foxsmall is.
Thanks so much for all your work in Wikipedia. JesseW, the juggling janitor 08:24, 21 September 2005 (UTC)

Thanks. Adam 08:37, 21 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Jesse, thanks for your efforts over this. The copy of the map you located is rather poor after being reproduced in some way, so I think it will have to be abandoned. I don't now recall the provenance of the Petrov photo, so it will probably be deleted when the photopolice get to it. I'm, not actually greatly worried about old and unsourced photos, I accept that they need to be deleted. I was annoyed however at the deletion of an original graphic without consultation. Hiya - you've changed the Johnny Woo page into a redirect for the Judge Dredd Megazine and called it a "merge". However, none of the material has been merged into the other article. Also, Johnny Woo, as a separate character to Judge Dredd, is notable enough for a separate article (for all that the one that was there was too stubby - I kept meaning to deal with it). History of the Internet

No, I'm not happy at all with his proposed changes. I was just about to post a message on the Talk: page (I'm still busy doing today's work on WP:RfD, that was next on my list), basically suggesting the exact same thing you propose - that he propose changes to the existing page (which, I note, is hardly anything I wrote - in the 100 edits prior to that version, only two are by me, and one is a dab fix).

You need to understand that he is trying to change the page around to follow his novel personal historical interpretation, based in large part on personal research. The emphasis he wants to give to things is absolutely out of tune with the standard works on the subject, e.g. the standard academic history of the Internet, Inventing the Internet, by Janet Abbate (MIT Press). Noel (talk) 00:14, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

PS: He also seems to have an unlimited amount of time to spend on this project to reform this page into the form he wants. I was spending many hours a day dealing with him for a couple of days, before I had to rejoin my normal life. I spend an hour or two a day on this, but I simply cannot put in 12 hours a day, every day, keeping up with his obsession about this page. Noel (talk) 00:21, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure how to respond to Noel's comments. I've done my best to present well researched information, and had truely thought we had got over this. Was just about to comment that I was having second thoughts over a temporary rewrite as I couldn't see a way to work in the information on the other networks without changes to the structure. Since Noel does not want expanded mention of these networks at all, I see no way to progress.

I'm going to give up. I've had my fill of personal attacks and petty bickering, Noel can have the article to write what ever he wants. --John R. Barberio talk, contribs 01:14, 22 September 2005 (UTC) [reply]

A lot of those pics are more than 50 yrs old. Mainly because the writers themselves have been dead for longer than that. AFAIK, that makes them copyright-free? But I could be misinformed. --Peripatetic 10:55, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Information Request

I'm leaving you this message because you posted a reply on the Copyright Violation page. Please let me know if there is a different procedure to follow.

I posted a request for removal of a copyrighted image nearly 5 days ago, and it has not been responded to nor any action taken. I see that responses to other requests are generally posted within a day or so.

Would you please take a look at my request to remove the image "Wintu Women Circa 1900" [1] and let me know if there is some other method I should be following to achieve the removal of this copyrighted image.

The text of the request is below:

"Copyright infringement

"I have been contacted and informed that an image as to which I represent the copyright holders is posted in Wikipedia Commons without permission. Please remove the following image immediately: [Wintu_Women_circa_1900.jpg].

"The source of the image is listed as the website of the College of the Siskiyous, where the image appears with permission; the image on that website clearly contains the copyright statement: © 2001 Masson-Gomez Family.

"I have read the statement of the person who originally posted the image, and it appears that he was under the mistaken impression that the copyright had expired - that impression is incorrect. While the image was created some time ago, it remained privately held by the family, and was not published or registered for copyright until recently. Under the Copyright Act, this image is clearly currently copyright protected.

"Under 17 U.S.C. sec. 303, as a work created before 1978 but not theretofore in the public domain, which was then first published in 2001, the copyright remains active until December 31, 2047. There is a very useful chart published on the Cornell University website that sets out these complex rules in a simple way Copyright Protection Chart.

"If you have any questions please contact the administrator of the College of the Siskiyous website directly, and he will confirm the copyright status of the image.

"Again, please remove this protected image immediately.

Sipi--CSD

This is just a query: I'm puzzled why you removed the SD tag from Sipi. It's a dicdef for a word that, as I said in the SD tag, does not exist. Doesn't that make clear that it's nonsense, a clear hoax? What else could it be? It's not a big deal, since it won't survive AfD anyway, but I was curious what your rationale was. You can reply on the article's AfD page if you'd like, since mine wasn't the only vote for speedy. Thanks. Chick Bowen 23:20, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

KF's images

Hi there. "Please check your images", you informed me, "I noticed that you have some images in the category Category:Images with unknown source. Due to the vast number of images in this category (12000+), and the fact that, lacking a source, they present considerable copyright uncertanty, Jimbo has stated, and added to the Criteria for Speedy Deletion, "Images in category "Images with unknown source" or "Images with unknown copyright status" which have been in the category for more than 7 days, regardless of when uploaded." This means the images can, and will, be deleted with no notice. To see a list of all the images you've uploaded (at least, under this username), review the upload log. You might also find User:Pearle/by-author-Category:Images_with_unknown_source.txt to be useful (search for your username). If you have any questions, please let me know."

Thanks for your message. Well, the upload log mentioned above only goes back as far as the end of 2004. At User:Pearle/by-author-Category:Images_with_unknown_source.txt my user name cannot be found. All I can say is that back in 2002 or early 2003, when image tags on Wikipedia were still a thing of the future, I did upload a few images which might, in retrospective, be considered as having an "unknown source". I've stated this over and over again on all sorts of talk pages, and whenever someone pointed me to a concrete image without a tag I could react in an appropriate manner.
Your message above, however, does not help, for the reasons given. In many cases it would be easy—in fact very easy—to just add the {{screenshot}} tag because that's what many of them are, and I'd be sad to see them deleted. However, as I said above, there is no way I could track them down or retrieve them.
All the best, <KF> 18:03, 27 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed on Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts that you are good with JS. I was hoping that you might help me. I copied the add tab, Ll link, purge tab, and last diff tab scripts and placed them in my monobook. I have removed the last diff tab for the time being. I would appreciate your input. Thanks. Psy guy (talk) 17:26, 28 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've looked at your copy of the lastDiff function, and it's fine. I've tested my copy, and it's fine. I am puzzled. What browser, OS, etc, are you using? I doubt I can fix it, but it's worth trying... Sorry it didn't work. JesseW, the juggling janitor 17:35, 28 September 2005 (UTC)

Er. "real user"? I'm not sure what you mean by this - the account was a Wikipedia:Sockpuppet of some other user, or what? In any case, while I appreciate the information, I am somewhat confused as to what your relationship is to it. Why are you watching the talk page of a inactive user? Not that there's anything wrong with it, just that it seems odd. But, thanks anyway. JesseW, the juggling janitor 07:03, 29 September 2005 (UTC)
right on. sorry. I'm bitter. he nominated something that was meaningful to me for deletion. there ya go. I found this suspicious cuz 1.) he never seemed to give a solid reason why he nominated it, tho plenty of other people made a reasonable case for deletion. and 2.) he hasn't done shit on wikipedia since. I recently came back to his talk page to see if he would defend his action. ya know, usually people make a case for their deletion nomination, if someone objects. usually, ya know, this proces entails a community working together to decide what's deleted and what's not. Rational people are often seen working together civilly, right? I have yet to hear back from him. this is why the deletion process is f-ing gay.
so. wow. thanks for listening. I noticed you left him a message. I basically meant to say I don't think he's "home". and, he doesn't seem to be a typical "user with a stake in the community." I could be wrong. I'm currently waiting to hear back. Ish (fake science alert) 21:55, 29 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Undelete and bring to AfD?

A few days ago I noticed you deleting a number of articles tagged as speedies. Just judging from the summary available in the deletion log and a quick googling, it seems to me that a few of these may have potential. I would suggest undeleting them and taking them to WP:AFD instead. I think there is a chance somebody will expand them there. See list below. Tupsharru 14:46, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • "Michael P. Haydock" (content was: '{{nn-bio}}Michael P. Haydock was the former boss of Cray Inc.{{business-bio-stub}}{{compu-bio-stub}}')
Somebody who has been president and CEO of a leading producer of supercomputers is probably notable
You are probably correct; however, I feel this can be deleted under CSD A1 - minimal context as well; nevertheless, if you wish to recreate it, I won't speedy it again. (It's not that hard to recreate, as you have the full text right there.
  • "David Komansky" (content was: '{{nn-bio}}{{importance}}David Komansky (born 1939) was chairman of Merrill Lynch.
Another leader of a major corporation
Same as above; CSD A1 as well, feel free to recreate.
  • "Michael Garland" (content was: '<nowiki>{{nn-bio}}Michael Garland is a book illustrator.{{artist-stub}}Garland')</nowiki>
It is perhaps debatable whether this is an assertion of notability, but he seems to have illustrated quite a few books[2][3]
Merely being a book illustrator is not a assertion of notability; however, if you want to create good stub on him, I would be delighted - go to it!
  • "K. C. Bokadia" (content was: '{{nn-bio}}K C Bokadia is an Indian filmmaker.{{film-stub}}Bokadia')
Has an IMDB page with several films listed: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0092555/
Sale as the last one; being a filmaker is not an assertion of notability; however, if he really is notable, please create a good stub. JesseW, the juggling janitor 18:32, 2 October 2005 (UTC)
  • "Deepak Tijori" (content was: '<nowiki>{{nn-bio}}{{cleanup-importance}}Deepak Tijori (b. 28 August,1961) is an Indian actor.{{actor-stub}}')</nowiki>
IMDB-page: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0863120/
Same as above.
  • "Farouque Sheikh" (content was: '{{nn-bio}}Farouque Sheikh is an Indian actor.{{actor-stub}}Sheikh')
IMDB-page: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0787582/
Same as above.
  • "Kenneth Calman" (CSD A1 content was: '{{delete}}Vice Chancellor of Durham University')
Little content, but chances are some Durham student or alumnus might improve it if it was brought to AfD.
Why burden AfD? Just mention on the Durham University page that it would be nice to have a article on Kenneth Calman, the Vice Chancellor, and you are more likely to find someone knowledgeable to work on it.

While I appreciate you looking over the speedy deletions, and I encourage you to continue(I've done it myself recently), I don't think these specific ones need to be undeleted(mainly due to their minimal content making recreation trivial). Thanks for the discussion! JesseW, the juggling janitor 18:32, 2 October 2005 (UTC)

I just thought it may be a good idea to give whoever might be interested the chance to improve them before they get deleted. That doesn't work with speedy deletion, but is frequently the result of an AfD. However, I am not in the habit of writing one-line substubs and I don't personally care enough about any single of these articles to recreate it with proper content myself. If you don't think undeletion and AfD is appropriate in these cases, I'm not going to insist on it. Tupsharru 22:27, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
"Improve" them? But the point that I, and Friday, have been trying to make is precisely that there is a negligible ammount of content to improve - these pages were effectively requested articles, not real articles, or even stubs. AfD is not a place to list requested articles. I am glad you are not in the habit of writing one-line substubs. ;-) JesseW, the juggling janitor 23:50, 2 October 2005 (UTC)

At the risk of being a buttinski, here's an outside opinion. What's the point of undeleting articles with such minimal content? Anyone who wanted to write a proper article on any of these subjects could easily do so, without benefit of undeletion. Afd is pretty crowded these days; I'd hate to see it used unneccessarily. To me an undeletion generally only makes sense when it's the only way to get useful content back. Friday (talk) 16:17, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't mind the buttinski-ing. As I said above, I agree with you on these. Thanks. JesseW, the juggling janitor 18:32, 2 October 2005 (UTC)

Florist

Jesse, I created a bunch of stubs, Floral design, Floristry and Floristics after I noticed that some <stricken out> experts turned them into redirects to ikebana. Only after that I noticed your excellent essay "Florist". However I cannot help but notice that the proper title to the text of "Florist" would be "Floristry". I trust you to finish the job: AFAIK, the "-stry" article must have an emphasis on the craft, while the "-st" article on the skills, if you know what I mean.

If you have things better to do, you may want to simply merge florist and floristry; I will not mind. mikka (t) 05:00, 4 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the compliment! I thought it(the essay at Florist) was probably under the wrong title, but it's not a very focussed essay, so I wasn't really sure. I've merged it into Floristry. Thanks! JesseW, the juggling janitor 23:01, 4 October 2005 (UTC)

Hi Jesse, the pages you mentioned are too wordy and unfriendly for new users.

My suggestion would be something like this:

---

We don't have an article called "Newarticletextanon."

But you can write it!

Wikipedia encourages its readers to help contribute information to this free encyclopedia that anyone can edit.

There are a couple of important guidelines:

  1. Anonymous edits are discouraged.
  2. Creating a user account has benefits.
  3. Linkspam and advertising is forbidden.
  4. Contributions must be considered notable and be written from a neutral point of view.
Remember most of all that Wikipedia is not primarily an experiment in Internet democracy. It's a project to write an encyclopedia.

For more information, read the introduction and your first article first.

If you want to experiment, go to the sandbox.

Firefox extension

Would you happen to know how to make a firefox extension? It would be very simple and used to fight vandalism. The basic idea is to feed RC diff's into firefox, and let it determine which pages contain text (such as an obscenity) listed in a file. For pages that don't contain anything on this list, the tab is closed. The others remain open and ready to be examined. If you can't figure out how to hookup the IRC RC output into firefox, then it could be used with CDVF to open new tabs in firefox to be checked. I found a guide to making extensions, but it says you need to know Javascript. Thanks. — BRIAN0918 • 2005-10-30 03:47

Your monobook.js - cross-browser

I've found a few bugs in your monobook.js making it not cross-browser compatible (I'm an Opera user myself). I wasn't sure whether to edit your copy directly.

  1. When finding changes since my last edit and parsing the history page, Opera seems to consider the line-break preceding the list of <li> elements as a text node. Hence hists[n].getElementsByTagName("span") doesn't work. I fixed this by testing first whether hists[n] has getElementsByTagName...
  2. element.textContent is Mozilla-proprietry code, although Opera will be bringing it in in Opera 9. It is probably best to build a new function, ie function textContent(el) { if (el.textContent) return el.textContent; return el.innerText; } - then call textContent(el) instead of el.textContent.

If you would like me to make these changes to your code myself, I would be happy to. --jnothman talk 06:33, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Jesse - I think you made a mistake when adding a new article to be deleted to today's log. I checked your recent controbutions and I assumed you were trying to nominate A Step Behind, so I fixed it and put them in (see my change). However I wanted to check with you to make sure the ssumption was a correct one and that I did in fact put the right thing in the right place. --Bachrach44 00:09, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I had already noticed it and added it to the page for the 9th. I've now removed it from the 9th. Thanks. JesseW, the juggling janitor 00:17, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

no sources

Hey Jesse, I notice you've removed the no source tag from a couple of images I tagged. I appreciate they are potentially from the comics, but there's a bid to tighten up the fair use rules on this, and it's desirable that such images are explicitly sourced, that is the newspaper or comic book they are scanned from is clearly cited on the image description page, or that the website they were taken from is listed. Mind, since there is no copyright information, would you prefer if I tagged them as that? Steve block talk 21:36, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I did notify the uploaders when I tagged them, and if they haven't sourced them I'm more than happy for them to be deleted, isn't that what we're supposed to do? Steve block talk 21:50, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. That makes sense, if the comics fair use people consider that a specific source is required, and the tag alone is insufficient, I'm happy to delete them. I'd suggest that the tag {{comicspanel}}, be updated to say that, though. Maybe something like: "All images tagged with this tag must explicitly cite the newspaper or comic book they are scanned from, or the website where they are copied from. Otherwise, the images will be deleted." Thanks, I'll delete such images when I see them, as of now. JesseW, the juggling janitor 21:58, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
That's an idea, although, I've heard that the idea is to deprecate all other fair use tags in favour of {{fairusein}}. I'm not sure I'd delete them on sight either, I'd be inclined to tag and warn the uploader, or is that what you meant? As for the album covers, I wouldn't want to say what to do with them. I know there are people at Wikipedia:WikiProject Fair use who would say delete them, but if you don't want to delete them I wouldn't. If in doubt and all that. I'm finding Wikipedia is getting very hard to deal with at the minute, I'm trying to pull myself back to just comics related issues to be honest. Steve block talk 22:11, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Thanks Jesse. It's time I was in bed but thanks for the kind words. I really do think I'm going to try and stick to the article space, it's so much easier and is more the point of it all. Anyway, have a WikiThanks, , you really cheered me up. And likewise, I appreciate the work you do round here as well. Steve block talk 22:24, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting an image: don't you inform the uploader first?

Hello Jesse,

I was very surprised to see that you had deleted the image image:Harold-Wilberforce-Clifton.gif that I uploaded a year ago, and which is promimently used in the Harold Clifton article. Isn't it normal to at least to notify the forthcoming deletion on the talk page of the uploader and the talk page of the article where the picture is used? If you would have done so, I would gladly have adjusted copyright or whatever tagging the world would have deemed necessary. I'll re-upload the picture. Wim van Dorst 18:33, 11 December 2005 (UTC).[reply]

Same theme, Jesse. On December 10 you deleted "Image:Pwbotha.jpg" and do not appear to have informed the uploader first—J.J.—who actually created the original Pieter Willem Botha article. When J.J. uploaded the image on February 25, 2004 he described it as a "public domain government portrait", which seems a good enough source although the copyright status isn't clear. As a result of your deletion, I uploaded a replacement "Image:PWBotha.jpg" on December 16 on the "fairusein" template but this was quickly listed at Wikipedia:Copyright problems because of a suspected copyright violation. Although a postage stamp image has now been uploaded as "Image:Pwbotha.jpg" to replace the deleted version, I prefer J.J.'s public domain government portrait. Is there any reason that J.J. cannot now re-upload the original portrait (with suitable source/copyright citations) to replace the postage stamp image?Phase1 14:53, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Dzamonja and others

Yea they all have tags but I didn't put the sources for all - which at the time didn't seem a necessity from all the images I've been coming across. Anyway, the Dzamonja img is from Wikiverse. I put that there. Unfortunately, I don't know where the original poster got it from - can't find it anywhere. Antidote 00:20, 12 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

PS: I don't see whats the problem with the Stojowskia and Nybut images. I added not removed tags. Antidote 00:23, 12 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Dzamonja

Maybe you can ask the User who originally uploaded it where he found it? Antidote 04:48, 12 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Stojowski and Nybut

Well I doubt the image is copyrighted by the webpage holders - I think they just took it from a book or something since it looks more like an old picture (like you mentioned). Seeing as it can be used in a webpage of the like - it seems no stringent copyright rule may be imposed upon it. Antidote 04:55, 12 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Cleaning up after image deletions

Hi Jesse! Could you make sure that when you delete an unsourced image you check first to make sure that no articles link to that image, and de-link any that do. I just went to the page for Handsworth, South Yorkshire and there is an ugly red-link in place of the image that used to be there (Image:Handsworth,_Sheffield.jpg). Thanks, JeremyA 05:54, 12 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

After all the deletions that need to be done(i.e. the no source, and the no license, and the WP:CP pages are all without backlogs, I'll happily work on the parts of the process than do not require janitorial functions. I appreciate the reminder. (And, hey, we are getting closer: the no source category is under 3000!) JesseW, the juggling janitor 06:43, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

Delay on image deletions

According to WP:CSD I4, Images are not suppsoed to be spedy deleted unles they ahve been tagged with {{nosource}} or a simialr tag of 7 days or more. It looks from the log as if you deleted Image:Tournamentbracket.png on the same day it was tagged. The uploader has just inquired at the help desk. I happen to think it is a good idea when tagging images as no source to notify the uploader -- he might be able to provide source and copyright info -- but it seems that the tagger did not do so in this case. DES (talk) 17:45, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

While I do appreciate the reminder, and the help in cleaning up the errors that will unavoidably come up when doing as large a job as clearing out the backlog at {{no source}}, it seems you read the log wrong in this case. According to the history of Image:Tournamentbracket.png the no source tag was added 08:13, 10 January 2005; according to the deletion log, I deleted it on 16:36, 10 December 2005, 12 months later. While it is a shame that the uploader was not notified, I did follow the procedure in the CSDs. I'm delighted that the uploader still had a copy and was able to reupload it, with proper source and license info. The process is working; thanks for your help. (Copied to help desk, and DES's talk) JesseW, the juggling janitor 21:55, 14 December 2005 (UTC)
My apologies -- I seem to have mis-read the log. No doubt the coincidence in day-of-the-month helped me mis-read. I agree that the delting admin is under no obligation to notify the uploader and delay further if the image has been tagged properly. In this case the image was retrived from a mirror, answers.com, as suggested on the Lost Images page. Thanks for your work on image cleanup. DES (talk) 22:04, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Dzamonja image

Uh, sorry for a belated answer: I haven't been on wiki for some time. Well-sincerely, I don't recall exactly. I think (not sure) it was a xeroxed image from a Croatia's tourist guide I received via e-mail. Still-I'm not sure. With regard to copyright policy, you know the rules. BANi

BANi seems to be having difficulty comprehending image policy and copyright. He's blanked his talk page a couple of times, and is obviously feeling persecuted by you by his remark on his user page. What are we going to do with all the unsourced, probably copyrighted, material he's uploading? --Gareth Hughes 02:59, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry(but not surprised) that he's angry at me. The way I went about dealing with his unsourced images was not as calm as it ought to have been. I will apologize for my tone on his page. As for the images, deal with them as per process (i.e. wait 7 days, reverting the template removal if this happens, then delete them.) I would appreciate it if someone else did this, to keep from inflaming his resentment against me. I really do appreciate you helping out in this matter. If I can be of further help, please let me know. JesseW, the juggling janitor 03:09, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

deleting images

Could you take care to please remove images from articles in which they are used before deleting them? I've noticed at least two separate occasions in which images you have deleted for copyright reasons were not first removed from articles, which leaves nasty red links. Furthermore, removing it from the article will at least alert those people who watchlist the article that a new image is needed. --Fastfission 00:54, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

As I said higher on this talk page: "After all the deletions that need to be done(i.e. the no source, and the no license, and the WP:CP pages are all without backlogs, I'll happily work on the parts of the process than do not require janitorial functions. Watchlist problem

Hi, Jesse. Thanks for trying to help me out. I am still unable to remove Wikipedia talk:Wikiproject:Alternative medicine/Archive 1 from my watchlist. I think I added "x" to the article and its talk page last week hoping that creating the article would help me to remove it. I don't notice any other technical problems with my watchlist or ability to edit. It's sort of like an annoying fly that I can't shake. Cheers! Edwardian 01:47, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Rocker images

Hi

I am the main contributor / developer of the Rocker topic and webmaster of the http://www.the59club.com. I see that you have deleted our photographs, seemingly without any consultation.

I would like them re-instated. If you can help me, I will apply the correct copyright status.

All images - except for those stated otherwise - are credited to the collection of Father Graham Hullett who was leader of the 59 Club.

Those of his collection used with his permission.

I am sorry if I missed an notification you placed but for the life of me I cant remember seeing any. This article was the first I contributed to and, I will be honest, I did not know what notification I was supposed to put up there on the image page.

Thanks,

I assume you are referring to the article Rockers, the images Image:Rockers1.jpg, Image:Rockershiroko.jpg, Image:Rockerscaferacer.gif, Image:Rockerspete.jpg, Image:Rockersannie.jpg, and Image:Rockerbikes.jpg, and you are User:Mitsu(the uploader of all those images)? First, I just want to thank you for writing and illustrating the article - I just read it, and it's very nice, and quite interesting. I also want to applogize for no-one having contacted you with regards to the un-sourced status of the images. When they were tagged as being un-sourced, the person who tagged them should have contacted you. In regards to the images, please see this page for some basic points that you need to be aware of with regards to uploading images for use on Wikipedia. If the images you had uploaded fit those requirements, I'd be delighted if you would re-upload them (if you don't stil have copies, you may be able to find them at one of the Wikipedia mirrors). Thanks again for your work on the article, and sorry about this mis-communication. JesseW, the juggling janitor 05:46, 19 December 2005 (UTC)
Hi. Yes, that is right. I am not a " pro " wikipedian, I only take on what I know and I was personally involved in all this stuff, i.e. not book learnt. It was the first I wrote and I had no idea that I had to put that stuff on personal or club photographs. Ditto the comments above from someone else about contacting uploaders and removing image links from articles, it makes them look awful.195.82.106.127 21:11, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well, lets get them back up there; the most important thing with regards to using images on Wikipedia is that they be "free content", i.e. Public Domain, or released under the GFDL (or various other similar licenses). Are you the copyright holder for these images, or can you contact the person or organization who is? The next needed piece of information is a description of the source, which can help make it clear who the copyright owner is (as well as just explaining the photo). I asssume you can provide this without any trouble. Finally, when that information is in order, we just need to reupload the images. Do still have copies (or are they up on the 59club website?) I do appreciate you working with me to get the images properly sourced and licensed, and back up in the article - I think they did (and will) really add to it. Thanks for helping out the 'pedia! JesseW, the juggling janitor 00:25, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

Image deletion being what it is, I don't seem to have any way of reviewing the original upload comments, but my belief is that all of the images you deleted were uploaded punctiliously following the precise directions that were current at the time. That called for the specific language that was proper at the time, namely "Released under the terms of the Wikipedia license." The WIkipedia license was, in fact, the GFDL, but the language people were told to use was "Wikipedia license."

I don't want to get into a big brouhaha about it, but if that is correct then I am annoyed that you didn't have the courtesy to notify me and give me a chance to tag them.

I will re-upload them when I get a chance, but it's a nuisance, particularly since Wikipedia has no provisions for batch-uploading images. Dpbsmith (talk) 13:29, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No matter what you put on them, I'm sorry you were not contacted. Assuming you took the photos yourself, just stating "I took this" and whatever other information you want to provide, and tagging them as should be quite sufficient. Just for the record, according to Special:Undelete(which does work for Image description pages, just not the images themselves), for Image:Specrx-letterscamblur.png, you said only "For a forthcoming article on eyeglass prescriptions". You can see how that would not exactly be a clear source or license statement. I will see if I can find them on a mirror, and I'd be happy to upload them if you can provide me with the necessary info. I do appreciate you contacting me about them. JesseW, the juggling janitor 22:25, 19 December 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for letting me vent, and thanks for showing me how to retrieve them from answers.com... which happened to save me time, as the versions I have locally on my computer have slightly different filenames. Yeah, I didn't give them a proper license notice when I uploaded them originally. I've uploaded them myself... Dpbsmith (talk) 01:51, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
