Paratriathlon

History

ITU Paratriathlon Competition Categories

For the purposes of international competition, organised under the rules of the International Triathlon Union (ITU), the focus is on physical and vision impairment and paratriathletes compete in six grades of competition (TRI 1 to TRI 6).

As at the 2009 World Championships, the current ITU Paratriathlon Competition Categories are:

Category Description
TRI 1 Handcycle: Paraplegic, Quadriplegic, Polio, Double Leg Amputee. Must use hand cycle on bike course and racing wheel chair on run.
TRI 2 Severe leg impairment: Above knee amputees. Athlete must ride bicycle and run with above knee prosthesis (or similar prosthesis) or run using crutches.
TRI 3 Les Autre: Includes athletes with Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy, Cerebral Palsy, double leg amputee runners or paralysis in multiple limbs. These athletes will ride a bicycle and run. They may use braces or prosthesis if required.
TRI 4 Arm impairment: Including paralysis, above elbow amputees and below elbow amputees, or impairment in both upper limbs. Athletes may use prosthesis, brace or sling on the bike and/or run.
TRI 5 Slight leg impairment: Including below knee amputees. Athlete rides bicycle and runs with prosthesis.
TRI 6 Visual Impairment: legally Blind (20/200 vision with best corrective vision). A handler of the same sex is mandatory throughout the race. Athlete is tethered during the swim. Athlete uses a tandem bicycle and may be tethered during the run.

Depending on the grade of competition, assistance may be allowed during transition.

Under ITU rules which require that impairment is both permanent (always present) and resulting in at least a 15% reduction in function, competitors with certain conditions (such as multiple sclerosis or arthritis) are ineligible to participate if their condition involves any period of remission from physical impairment (whether controlled with medication or otherwise), however brief, even if they are not currently in remission.

Paratriathlon at the Paramlymics

Paratriathlon in not currently a Paralympic sport; but, by the end of 2009, the ITU plans to submit an application to the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) for the sport’s inclusion in the 2016 Paralympic Games and, if accepted, propose non-medal demonstration races to be held at the London 2012 Summer Paralympic Games and the 2011 Pan American Games.

Paratriathlon around the world

At a national level, the precise method of classification and grades of competition can differ from those used by the ITU and classification rules are laid down by the relevant national governing body.

Paratriathlon in the United Kingdom

The British Triathlon Federation operates a more inclusive classification of paratriathletes into one of forty functional profiles - ranging from wheelchair users with arm impairment through to those who live with sensory or learning impairments, but no physical impairment – organised into nine grades of competition (TRI 1 to TRI 9).

The first six grades of competition (TRI 1 to TRI 6) are for various degrees of physical impairment. These six classification grades should not be confused with the identically named grades used by the ITU.

The last three grades of competition are for competitors with other impairments, defined by British Blind Sport (TRI 7), the Deaflympics / UK Deaf Sports (TRI 8) and the UK Sports Association for People with Learning Disability (TRI 9). Competitors from the last two of these grades (TRI 8 and TRI 9) are therefore not illegible to compete in ITU sanctioned events; but are able to prepare competitively for other international events, such as the Deaflympics and the Special Olympics.

Paratriathlon in the United States

Paratriathlon in the United States is more commonly known as Physically Challenged Triathlon.

USA Triathlon authorised competitions are organised according to the same six grades of competition used for ITU events – five (TRI 1 to TRI 5) for physical impairment and one (TRI 6) for visual impairment.
