Alexandros - Andreas Grigoropoulos (Greek: Αλέξανδρος Γρηγορόπουλος) (1993-6 December 2008) was a 15-year-old student who was shot and killed by Greek police special guard Epaminondas Korkoneas, in the inner district of Exarcheia in Athens, Greece when, in a group of boys throwing rocks at police, he launched a petrol bomb at an officer, as Greek police said[1].
Known as "Gregory" to his friends, Grigoropoulos lived in the Athens suburb of Palaio Psixiko. His Armenian mother is a jeweller, and his father is a bank manager. He attended a private school in Athens's northern suburbs.[2]
The lawyer of the 37-year-old special guard Epaminondas Korkoneas[3] who fired the gun, claimed that the boy was hit by a ricochet from a warning shot[4], although eye witnesses have testified that he actually aimed the shot at Alexandros.
The death of the boy set off a great wave of consecutive riots, causing immense damage in Athens, Thessaloniki and many other Greek cities.[5]
He is buried in Palaio Faliro Cemetery.His funeral was attented by more than 4.000 people, where the majority were teenagers and children accompanied by their parents. During the funeral, major fights exploded between the police and the people attending the funeral, after people noticed the presence of police force near the cemetery[citation needed].
