Stephen Edward Epler developed six-man football in 1934 (for which he is a member of the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame and founded Vanport Extension Center in 1946, which later became Portland State University, not letting the institution die after the Vanport Flood. He was also the first president/superintendent of Ohlone College [1].

A residence hall at PSU is named after him.[3]
