During the analysis period spanning from 1980 to 2016, we calculate independent scores for perceived temperature, cloud cover, and total precipitation for each hour between 8:00 AM and 9:00 PM every day. These scores are then combined into a single composite score for each hour, which is further aggregated into daily averages across all the years in the analysis period. These daily averages are then smoothed. |
Our cloud cover score ranges from 10 for completely clear skies, gradually decreasing to 9 for mostly clear skies, and reaching a minimum score of 1 for entirely overcast skies. |
The precipitation score is based on the three-hour precipitation centered on the hour in question, with a score of 10 indicating no precipitation. This score linearly decreases to 9 for trace precipitation and ultimately drops to 0 for 0.04 inches of precipitation or more. |
Our tourism temperature score starts at 0 for perceived temperatures below 50°F, increases linearly to 9 at 65°F, reaches its peak at 10 for 75°F, then decreases linearly to 9 at 80°F, and falls to a minimum of 1 for temperatures of 90°F or higher. |
Similarly, our beach/pool temperature score begins at 0 for perceived temperatures below 65°F, rises linearly to 9 at 75°F, reaches a maximum score of 10 at 82°F, and decreases linearly to 9 at 90°F, with a minimum score of 1 for temperatures of 100°F or above. |
