Number articles

Hello! I see you just went through 15 (number), adding cn tags. Actually, I'm not persuaded that citation tags on every sentence are a good thing, because the majority of the claims are unexceptionable, and ideally can easily be checked at the linked article. But I very much agree with the sentiment of wanting to clean up these articles - I put a request for comment on the project talk page, specifically about the notability requirements. But I would also like to start a more comprehensive cleanup. We are also currently being snowed under by a Brazilian group of IPs, or perhaps sock puppets, with (?)hundreds of trivial additions, in slightly broken English. (Latest to 15 was "The number "15" corresponds to the letter "F" in alphanumber (base 36)." I think there should be standardised rules (as far as is reasonable) like "No telephone numbers", and any statement about n which is true for any m with the appropriate bits changed. (Masses near the bottom of 15). Hope you can help. Imaginatorium (talk) 11:44, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Imaginatorium I think the general guideline is that references should be added incase content in the linked article deviates. Unless there are special cases such as for the number articles that I'm unaware about.
Yup, I'm willing to help. I've seen those edits too and have been quite confused by them; I've never been able to understand what they say. One example was something along the lines of "there are 3,030 years in the (real) Gregorian calendar" —Panamitsu (talk) 12:13, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The 3030 is that in every 4000 year cycle, there are 3030 years with 365 days, using the (rather uncommon) term "common year" to refer to them. Imaginatorium (talk) 13:32, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So would that mean that there are 970 leap years? Thanks! —Panamitsu (talk) 13:34, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Absolutely. See 970. Imaginatorium (talk) 13:39, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Good day! Have you checked out WP:DISCORD? Fair bit of discussion about article writing etc. over there, and seems like it might be your cup of tea. Generalissima (talk) 07:08, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Generalissima Well I guess I'll give it a try. Why do you ask? —Panamitsu (talk) 08:11, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed we were working in a similar area (New Zealand coinage) and figured it would be a good space to collaborate & share sources. Generalissima (talk) 15:05, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Goody Goody Gum Drops

On 1 November 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Goody Goody Gum Drops, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Goody Goody Gum Drops. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Goody Goody Gum Drops), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Merge

Why would you merge the page that was created before the new page? I didn't get it, as I was working on it and had added references. DIVINE 07:23, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@DIVINE I completely understand your frustration here as I've unfortunately had a similar thing happen, sorry for that. The reason I merged into the older article (November 2023 Nepal earthquake into 2023 Nepal earthquake) was because it contained much more content and had about 5x more edits (off memory). I'm not sure if this is in policy (if it's not, please slap me), but I've noticed smaller duplicate articles tend to be merged into bigger ones, simply because it can be difficult to merge a larger article into a smaller one.
If I've made a mistake, please let me know! —Panamitsu (talk) 07:49, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I am not sure about the rules here, but I had tagged it as under construction. Additionally, it was created one hour before the new user, and it was night here, so because of that, I fell asleep. But even in that case, there should have been a proper merge discussion. But being the original and first creator, I felt like someone else had taken my credit. @primefac Can you help something out here?
@Primefac: Fair enough, let's reverse the merger and create a merge discussion. Is it alright if you do that? It's currently night where I live. —Panamitsu (talk) 08:09, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Instead of reverse the merger and create the merge discussion please look into WP:MERGE and wait for the primefac inputs. DIVINE 08:13, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
From what I can tell, there was no copy/paste page move here; two editors created an article about the same event. As indicated above, the 2023 Nepal earthquake had more editors and more content, so it makes sense that it would be the target of any potential merge. This happens a lot, and I can understand that it is frustrating, but there really isn't anything administratively to do. Primefac (talk) 13:10, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Primefac but not in the same time. :) DIVINE 22:31, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There are a very many articles on recent or major events that get started by multiple people within hours of said event occurring. A few years back, after one of the school shootings in the USA, I seem to recall we had five articles created in a span of a few hours, which all eventually were merged into one page. Just because someone is the first to write about something on Wikipedia does not mean they are the only person who gets that credit. Heck, the reverse is also true - my account has dozens of pages that I "created" as redirects that are now fully-fledged articles - no one would give me the credit for creating them, though, even if my name is the first edit on the list, because I didn't actually add any content. Primefac (talk)
Got it thankyou as it doesn’t matter as i am happy that Wikipedia always keep records. I ping you to get your valuable insights which I already got you. No issues anymore & thankyou @Panamitsufor doing great job. DIVINE 10:22, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Postcard from the Coast

Postcard from the West Coast

Wednesday 8 Nov, 2023

A bit of a gap since the last postcard, but what a great time we've had with the Wikipedian at Large project in the interim • The highlight has been having Marshall and Lyn join me on the West Coast for a few days, visiting Fox Glacier and Whataroa • We now have good photo collections for the newly-created Waitangiroto Nature Reserve, and a a much improved article with galler • The Whataroa article has been improved with local history and links to the White Herons • We also have much better coverage of Fox Glacier, including new Ngāi Tahu viewing place Te Kopikopiko o te Waka, and photos of Te Weheka Walkway/Cycleway and the South Side Walkway/Cycleway • Could I get you all to check back through your contributions and add anything extra you've done to the [Progress page as we wrap up • Also—I'm hosting a catch-up meeting on Sunday November 12, 2:30 pm, online at my Whereby chat room. This is a chance to go over anything you'd still like to see improved, talk about how the project went and possibilities for future ones, and announce winners of prizes for most or best contributions. Drop me a line at mike@rove.wiki if you can make it (or can't but have ideas about the project) • Thank you all for your contributions, however small, and chat soon. — Giantflightlessbirds

Invitation to an in-person meetup in Mohua / Golden Bay

Golden Bay Air are holding some seats for us until 21 November

Thinking about your summer break? Think about joining other Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Golden Bay / Mohua! Details are on the meetup page. There's heaps of interesting stuff to work on e.g. the oldest extant waka or New Zealand's oldest ongoing legal case. Or you may spend your time taking photos and then upload them.

Golden Bay is hard to get to and the airline flying into Tākaka uses small planes, so we are holding some seats from and to Wellington and we are offering attendees a $200 travel subsidy to help with costs.

Be in touch with Schwede66 if this event interests you and you'd like to discuss logistics. Schwede66 09:14, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Schwede66, what happens during a meetup? Is it a bit like an edit-a-thon where attendees edit stuff related to Golden Bay? That surely does sound fun. —Panamitsu (talk) 09:56, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I’ve booked us a venue and we’ll have fun the whole weekend. So many interesting topics to work through. And these gatherings are quite enjoyable. Would be great if you could make it. But do book soon as the travel logistics can be challenging. Schwede66 13:02, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Schwede66 Could you clarify what you meant by "do book soon"? Hotel? I could probably come but can't be 100% sure considering it's quite a bit of time away. —Panamitsu (talk) 13:09, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If you have to fly, that’ll be the constraint. It’s past the holiday peak so accommodation should be ok. Schwede66 13:18, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Schwede66 I'll probably pass. I really have no idea how to travel and how to get there (I'm in Greater Wellington). I'd also be travelling alone, which I'm not fond of. —Panamitsu (talk) 06:04, 14 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I know of a Wellington couple who are coming over by car / ferry. If you want, I could enquire whether they would be happy to give you a lift; that solves the "travelling alone" issue. Schwede66 06:42, 14 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

After a revert, these can be placed on the user's talk page to let them know you considered their edit inappropriate, and also direct new users towards the sandbox. Yes, but I was on mobile at the time so it was not easy to template the user. The revert was also two days ago, so I'm not sure if that'd count as "recent". —Panamitsu (talk) 00:09, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It automatically came with the template: "subst:Uw-warn", It's likely irrelevant to the single-level template itself. I note that I wikilinked the article of your contribution which had the most recent version. yvanyblog(talk) 00:22, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I do not believe...

...that you have a legitimate reason (per WP:HOUND) to be following my contrib history. Indeed, given our last interaction, I believed that we had agreed to assume good faith with one another, and leave one another alone to the extent possible.

If I am not mistaken, this is your first edit to the article Stereotype or its talk page. Am I right in assuming that you got there by following my contribs? If so I will ask you to self-revert your comment and stay out of the conversation. I know that you mean well, but I don't find it constructive or collegial.

Thanks in advance for your understanding. Generalrelative (talk) 06:02, 27 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Generalrelative I'm sorry what? I've edited dozens of related articles. I even created the Discrimination against men article (which needs fixing). The article you mention is just one of those that I had on my watchlist for months without interacting with. Your request for me to self-revert my comment is unjustified and falls inline with my comment I made a few months ago about how you like to assume bad faith on my end.
I do not undersand the logic behind your assumption. Why would I be watching your contributions for months? —Panamitsu (talk) 06:13, 27 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's a standard assumption that people do not have articles they've never edited on their watchlists. If that's not the case for you I will make a mental note of it. I assumed that you were unfamiliar with the norms surrounding contrib use rather than bad faith. In any case it's too late to self-revert since your comment has been responded to. Best, Generalrelative (talk) 14:51, 27 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I was reviewing the DYK nomination for the Lemon & Te Aroha article - unfortunately I've had to reject it because the article has a {{advert}} cleanup tag on it. If that's dealt with (I think it mostly just pertains to the Revival section) I think it's fine for posting. Smurrayinchester 20:11, 27 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah that's fine. An editor pointed a few of these out and I haven't had the time to fix the problems yet, so rejecting it for now was probably the best thing to do. —Panamitsu (talk) 22:06, 27 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hang on Smurrayinchester, shouldn't the article be tagged with {{subst:DYK?no}}? The rejection says that "Article is either completely ineligible", which in the reply in your review you said that it needs a bit of work on the advertising and hook. I can get that done quite easily. —Panamitsu (talk) 21:19, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Have some bubble tea after writing Lemon & Te Aroha!

Hey, good job on the persistence to get Lemon & Te Aroha up to an acceptable article standard. Writing an article is one of the most valuable things editors can do and the whole reason we're on the project. I wanted to let you know that I think you did a good job dealing with some of the issues raised in the article during its NPP review, and that your work is valued here on the project! microbiologyMarcus (petri dishgrowths) 15:17, 29 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Signature

Hey, I just noticed your signature uses a lovely font, but on probably most systems, that font won’t show, and it is falling back to a serif font (mostly Times). If you include a fallback or two (I’d recommend Poppins, Helvetica, Sans-serif;) then it will at least display an approximate match for people who don’t have Poppins installed. — HTGS (talk) 21:05, 30 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Oh wow I had no idea. Thanks! —Panamitsu (talk) 21:18, 30 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Capitalization of Internet/internet

Hey Panamitsu, apologies for undoing this edit. While I personally prefer "internet", think the I/internet is moving in that direction, and prefer to leave it at the status quo, I also thought I was actioning a previous consensus. That was not accurate, as I missed a no consensus RfC held shortly after the discussion I linked to in my edit summary. Ed [talk] [OMT] 08:06, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Oh thank you for letting me know. I, for some reason, thought that consensus was on capitalising internet. As my preference is to capitalise internet, I wonder if that is some form of memory bias on my end? That'd be interesting to look into. —Panamitsu (talk) 08:14, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
