Shoeburyness is a railway station located in the town of Shoeburyness in the borough and unitary district of Southend-on-Sea in Essex, England. The station serves as the eastern terminus of the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway from Fenchurch Street railway station in the City of London, some 39 miles (62.7 km) to the west. The station is served by the National Express Group train operating company c2c. The station was renovated in January 2013 [1] When the London Underground's District line operated a non-stop excursion train service between 1910 and 1939 through to the Southend area, Shoeburyness was the terminus.[2]
Ticket office and facilities
The ticket office is open Monday - Friday 06:15 - 22:00, Saturday 08:15 - 17:40, Sunday 07:15 - 18:40 and is equipped with the TRIBUTE ticket issuing system. The station has sheltered bicycle storage for 10 cycles, and taxi rank, and 28 car parking spaces and 2 disabled spaces available. Arriva Southend bus services 4A (last bus and Sundays only) and 9 and Stephensons of Essex service 14 stop outside the station.[3]
Layout
The station is arranged in a through station layout despite being a terminal station. It was opened on 1 February 1884 by the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway. As a result of this layout, the station has step free access from Shoeburyness High Street to all of its platforms.
A connection exists to the Ministry of Defence site nearby at Pig's Bay to the east over the level crossing at Shoeburyness High Street, and extensive carriage sidings exist to the west.
Services
The typical off-peak service frequency is:
- 4tph (trains per hour) to Fenchurch Street via Basildon, of which:
- 2tph call at all stations
- 2tph do not stop at Pitsea, West Horndon or Limehouse
