The Graphics Lab is a project to improve the graphical content of the Wikimedia projects. Requests for image improvements can be added to the workshop pages: Illustrations, Photographs and Maps. For questions or suggestions one can use the talk pages: Talk:Graphics Lab, Talk:Illustrations, Talk:Photographs and Talk:Maps.
This specific page is the requests page for the photography workshop. Anyone can make a request for a photograph to be improved for a Wikipedia article. The standard format for making a request is shown below, along with general advice, and should be followed.

Advice to requesters

All requests:

  • Please make sure your request is "legitimate" by copyright. If the image(s) are in the public domain or freely licensed, you are fine. If the image(s) are "Fair use", there are only certain things we can do with them without falling afoul of Wikipedia's fair-use policies.
    • If you are requesting assistance with a copyright or fair-use image, don't display it on this page; place {{GLNF|Example.png|caption|align=left}} to create a link to it. Do not add the File: extension. Our fair-use policy does not allow displaying fair-use images out of their articles on ANY account.
  • Please check back regularly to see if progress has been made or if any additional questions need to be answered before the request can be completed.
  • If a request is done to your satisfaction, please mark it with {{resolved}}.

SVG requests:

  • Make sure your request can actually BE vectorized. Note that vector drawings are not suitable for certain applications. We generally use SVG format for icons, logos, drawings, maps, flags, and such. Certain things, photographs especially, are totally impossible to vectorize.
  • Per our non-free content policy, vectorization of copyrighted images is not permitted. If a vectorized non-free image is desired, seek out such an image from the copyright holder.

Tonga

Article(s): Sālote Tupou III, Coronations in Oceania, Tāufaʻāhau Tupou IV, James Egan Moulton

Request: Clean up the first image and make the second image less blurry. And clear up and brigthen the third image a little and also remove the tiny watermark on the bottom right corner; it's a google book label. Thanks.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 06:53, 6 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

Ed Barrow 1916

Article(s): Ed Barrow

Request: If possible, please remove the strange pattern/texture all over Barrow's hat, face and body. Thanks. Delaywaves • talk 23:52, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s): I'd say there isn't really much that could be done to improve the image's quality. There is just too much lost information to recover, any work would require a vast amount of time resulting in a heavily manipulated image, unfortunately on this one I'm afraid there isn't much that can be done. Pine Valley Mountains

Article(s): Silver Reef, Utah; Pine Valley Mountain Wilderness

Request: Could someone do some general cleanup on this image? A few editors and I are working on bringing Silver Reef, Utah to Featured status, and it would help if this image was cleaned up a bit. Thanks, The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 20:41, 19 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

Centpacrr, I reverted your edit. Sometimes you do fine work. This wasn't one of those times. I might also add that when viewing mountains in the distance, it is common to have a sort of foggy bluish cast. This is normal. It's not necessarily an error that needs to be "fixed". JBarta (talk) 22:12, 19 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What sort of "general cleanup" did you have in mind? JBarta (talk) 21:09, 19 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know much about editing photos, so I don't know how to describe what I want done. The best I can do is say "make it so it's not as blurry." The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 21:15, 19 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Dank was the one that suggested I bring the image here, so you could ask him. The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 21:16, 19 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Remove arm

Article(s): Kaukuna Kahekili

Request: Could someone remove the arm on the left "without cropping" the image. Thanks. KAVEBEAR (talk) 20:56, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

Wait could you also remove the black spot where her elbow use to be, the part above where the arm use to be, and the white spot on the bottom. I'll mark them.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 04:22, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Deep Throat restoration

Article(s): Deep Throat (film)

Request: Restore the poster, using the version already in the article as a guideline. If completed, please replace the old FUR image with the free image. Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:58, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

 DoneQuibik (talk) 20:10, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
What about the hands? You did a fine restoration job, but I think it would be even better with a nice hand job as well. JBarta (talk) 22:13, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, in all seriousness, while the restored image is certainly of higher quality and higher resolution than the small image, I think the small image is a nicer picture for the article. It has the hands extending above the top border and the feet resting on the T. It looks like this restored poster was simply a re-working of the smaller image. JBarta (talk) 22:24, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I do agree that the smaller version looks much better (aside from the quality, of course). It's a fair use image though and the only justification for using FU images is that no free alternatives exist... so, that won't work. About the hands: I considered adding them, but I didn't like the idea of combining two (very different size) images to create an ugly franken-poster. You may of course add them, if you feel like it. I'd have nothing against that. However, the best option would be using a proper version of that image, if possible, like this one. The pre-70s US copyright notice system is not too clear to me, though. Could someone (Crisco 1942, I'm looking at you) please confirm or refute that image's public domain-ness? —Quibik (talk) 23:09, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Pre 1977 US work with no copyright notice = Public domain. I asked at MCQ a while back for the poster for Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, and they said it would be safe to assume that there will not be a copyright notice on the back of a poster. Any digitization of a 2-dimensional PD work of art is also PD, per Wikimedia's ruling. Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:31, 22 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Haalelea's Feather Cape

Article(s): Haalelea, Featherwork, ʻahuʻula, Feather cloak

Request: Anyway to colorize this drawing of a Hawaiian feather cloak? KAVEBEAR (talk) 10:49, 24 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s): How does that look (above)? I took this image as a guide and did whatever I felt like doing. There wasn't much specified in the brief. Here's a little Christmas present if you (or anyone else) wants to give it a fiddle. (By which I mean do the other one!) :-) nagualdesign (talk) 05:49, 25 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!--KAVEBEAR (talk) 06:18, 25 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Can someone else do the other one?--KAVEBEAR (talk) 20:02, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Rembrandt etching

Article(s): Joseph and Potiphar's Wife (etching), List of etchings by Rembrandt, Potiphar

Request: Remove white background (the off-white paper) and straighten. Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:10, 25 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

Personally I think this image is fine just the way it is. It's not really crooked and the white paper showing through at the edges is minimal. There are a WHOLE lot of other images deserving of attention instead of fiddling around making unnecessary changes to perfectly good images. JBarta (talk) 12:09, 25 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I was wondering the very same thing. Something fishy is going on. JBarta (talk) 19:41, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I presume then that you did not post these. In that case I would suggest that you should promptly change your password and see if you can determine who has hacked your account. Centpacrr (talk) 19:52, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Those damn hackers. I'll bet it was the Chinese. Those dudes have been hacking the crap out of EVERYTHING. How do you think I might determine who may have hacked my account? JBarta (talk) 19:59, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I would suggest that you contact a Wikipedia Checkuser and see if one of them can help trace the IP that this particular posting came from, and in the meantime both change your password immediately and run a antivirus program on your PC to see if there is any keystroke recording app hiding on your hard drive. I would also scan through your contributions log and see if there any other postings listed there that you do not recognize. Centpacrr (talk) 20:09, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Checkuser won't do any good. Mine might be one of those zombie machines. The hacker will do his hacking through MY computer so it will appear as if I did it myself. You'd think these jokers would have better things to do than mess with random Wikipedians. JBarta (talk) 20:21, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I understand. I would still change your password and scan your hard drive for malware. Good luck and let me know if you find anything. Centpacrr (talk) 20:45, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If it happens again, can I come to you for advice? JBarta (talk) 20:48, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Of course, no problem. Also check your recent emails to see if you have received or opened anything suspicious. Centpacrr (talk) 20:51, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I did get something the other day... it was from someone named "mackpt" something and it seemed to be in Chinese. It definitely looked suspicious. JBarta (talk) 21:05, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Email addresses in spam, messages with trojans, malware, etc are almost always cloned and don't represent their real origin. I get quite a bit of spam in Chinese and other languages all of which I simply send to the trash. I never open attachments on anything that I can't confirm its origin. If you are suspicious but not sure, open the full headers to trace its path back to its originating IP. Centpacrr (talk) 21:24, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it doesn't happen to me very often. I would really like to know who this "mackpt" person is though. I'd really love to give him a piece of my mind. JBarta (talk) 21:33, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Touchup on Walker photo

Article(s): Samuel Colt

Request: Could I have this old image touched up or cleaned up? It is in an article going through FAC at the moment. ThanksMike - Μολὼν λαβέ 15:33, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, that came out awesome! Thanks!Mike - Μολὼν λαβέ 00:44, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. When I first saw the photo I thought it was a disaster. But you certainly did a fine job bringing it back. JBarta (talk) 00:59, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the kind words but I am not completely happy with it as yet so I have downloaded the hi res 12MB tiff file from the LoC to redo the figure of Walker and will then upload a hi res restoration. (I will not get to it till next week, however, as I'll be spending the next four days working on the NBC telecast of the NHL Winter Classic hockey game which will be played here on Monday afternoon.)
