The Used is an alternative rock band from Orem, Utah.

Career

The Beginning: Demos from the Basement

Demos from the Basement

The Used formed in Orem, Utah in the mid 1990s, during their earlier days they opened for a local band called Froglick. Drummer and founding member Branden Steineckert, guitarist Quinn Allman, and bassist Jeph Howard were already in the group, but they quickly decided they needed a full-time singer/frontman. Several singers were auditioned, but the band was unsatisfied with any of them until guitarist Quinn, suggested Bert McCracken, who he knew from pre-school. With McCracken on-board, the band recorded a few demos and played locally until catching the eye of John Feldmann from the punk group Goldfinger. In 2001, Feldmann had the band signed to Reprise Records and they recorded their 10 track demo CD all within a few months of meeting them. The Used were originally named "Used" but changed it to "The Used" when it was discovered a Boston band had already taken "Used".

Sucess: Self Titled

The Used released their first full-length studio album in 2002. They blew up and became a very popular band when the album was released. It featured four singles: "A Box Full of Sharp Objects," "The Taste of Ink," "Buried Myself Alive," and "Blue and Yellow." The album has gone platinum.

In Between Albums: Maybe Memories

Maybe Memories

In 2003, The Used released a CD/DVD combo package titled Maybe Memories. The CD featured live, unreleased, and demo material. The DVD featured the history of the band, member bios, and part of a live concert. It has since gone platinum.

More Sucess: In Love and Death

The Used released their second studio album in 2004. It was titled In Love and Death. The album received its name from the tragedies lead singer Bert McCracken was dealing with at the time. His girlfriend who was pregnant with his kid overdosed on drugs and his dog "David Bowie" was hit by a car and died. The song "Hard to Say" was written about Bert's deceased girlfriend. The album featured the singles: "Take It Away," "All That I've Got," "I Caught Fire (In Your Eyes)," and "Under Pressure" was on the 2005 re-release of the album. "Under Pressure" is a David Bowie and Queen cover song performed with My Chemical Romance. This was the band's second platinum album, it sold over 3 million copies.

Waiting for the New Album: Berth

Berth

In the early part of 2007, The Used released Berth which was their 2nd CD/DVD combo. It was originally planned for release in 2006 but production problems delayed it about a year, after a worker stole some of the footage. Its main feature was a full live concert of a headlining show in Vancouver, Canada. The DVD also featured what the band has been up to since they released In Love and Death, it continued from where Maybe Memories left off and gave a preview of the new album.

Future Plans: Lies for the Liars and EP

Lies for the Liars

The Used have finished recording their new album Lies for the Liars and will release it on May 22, 2007. Early on in the recording of the new album, drummer Branden Steineckert was kicked out of the band and he now plays with Rancid. Dean Butterworth of Good Charlotte filled in as a temporary drummer and recorded most of the drums on this album. Dan Whitesides was then announced as the official new drummer and toured with The Used of the 2007 Taste of Chaos Tour. This album will feature songs that they have been playing on the Rockstar Taste of Chaos tour 2007 including, the first single "The Bird and The Worm", and other songs such as "Hospital", "Liar, Liar (Burn In Hell)" & "Pretty Handsome Awkward". Due to the number of songs they have written, they plan an EP in the winter, orginally plans were to release two separate EPs this year but that changed. This was confirmed in an interview with Jeph and Quinn. [2]

Steineckert's Departure

The line up remained unchanged until September 12, 2006 when announced that Steineckert was no longer the drummer of The Used. The Used expressed that they needed to move forward without him but owed him a great deal of gratitude for all his hard work over the years. All the same, they wished him the best for his future endeavours. Later that year, it was announced drummer Dan Whitesides from the New Transit Direction replaced Branden Steineckert. Branden, has since joined Rancid to replace former drummer Brett Reed.
