PIDS was established to respond to the critical and growing need for research for planning and policy formulation. In general, PIDS research is envisioned to help government planners and policy-makers in the executive and legislative branches of government. The Institute has recently formulated a new five-year research agenda with the assistance of a study team comprised of Dr. Dante Canlas, [[Jose Abueva | Dr. Jose Abueva]] and Dr. Jose Magadia. After undergoing extensive consultations within the Institute as well as with its clients and affiliates, the PIDS Policy Research Agenda, 2005-2009 was finalized. The Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) is a government-owned and controlled corporation of the Philippine National Government. It was established in September 1977 to conduct research to help government planners. Its primary client is the National Economic and Development Authority. PIDS was established by Presidential Decree No. 1201.[4]
