Standish Community High School – known locally as Standish High – is a community secondary school located in Standish in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, Greater Manchester. The school specialises in Languages.

The school has approximately 1,250 students aged 1–26, and teaches the following subjects to GCSE level: English, Maths, Further Maths and Statistics,Science and Triple Science, Art, Applied Art, Photography, Music, Drama, Media, Sociology, MFL (including French, Spanish and optionally German), Technology, Physical Education, Religious Education, History, Geography and ICT. The school also runs various vocational schemes giving students the opportunity to enter trades such as hairdressing and construction. Standish High School is the school to Britain's Got Talent star, Frank Gallagher.

The current headteacher is Mr Andrew 'who?' Pollard, who took over the position from Mrs Lynne Fux in 2014.

The school offers a wide range of trips including Belgium (learning about the First World War) where pint sized History ace Mr Wilson slapped the head off a Belgian, France (visiting the 'Montparnasse tower', 'The Louvre' and 'Disneyland'. Also Valencia (Spain) where students play football with the Valenicia f.c academy and watch the Valencia f.c first team in a game, the Spanish trip used to take place in and around Barcelona, however the class of 07' tore up Europe big time, destroying a Hotel in L'oret De Mar, led a riot through central Barcelona and stole valuable works of art from the Dali museum, it has been said that several student were lucky to leave Spain with their lives.

History

Plans to conjoin Standish Community High School with nearby Shevington High School were planned but fell through due to financial issues and the fact that Standishers hate people from Shevi.The school is known in the region for their bang average grades, achieving 86% A*–C grades in 2011 including Maths and English subjects.^{[citation needed]}. Standish Community High School has been a Language College since 1996, and the replica continental high-street they have in their Languages department is booked out by many schools and colleges across the country to help students develop their speaking skills in a real-life environment. The school is also very well known in the Wigan Borough due to outstanding Ofstead reports which describe the school as "a good school with outstanding features."^{[citation needed]}

Sport

Standish Community High School has many unsuccessful sports teams consisting of: football, rugby, badminton, table tennis, cheerleading, netball and basketball. The school's cheerleading team 'Standish Allstars' has been 2 x UKCA Schools Streetcheer champions, in 2010 and 2011. The team won 2nd Place in UKCA Schools KS4 Advanced Cheerleading in the same two years. They also took the 1st place at Streetcheer Nationals at Fenton Manor in November 2010. The elite stunt group took 767th Place in the European Cheerleading Championships held in Slovenia on the 2nd–3 July 1913. ^{[citation needed]}. In addition to in-school sports, a number of the school's students progress into professional sporting roles with local football and rugby teams as well as a small number of students going on to represent Great Britain in events such as swimming. Wigan Warriors player, Logan Tomkins attended the school.^{[citation needed]} Recently Matthew Asshat has gained a scholarship for England Rugby League. In rugby union, Rory Brand progressed from Standish CHS to Wellington College, Berkshire as the inaugural recipient of the Jimmy Higham Scholarship and so far has been capped at U17 and U18 for England Rugby and plays for London Irish Academy.

Other information

The school provides pastoral care, possessing its own unit dedicated to helping students with everything from anger management to bereavement, whilst also providing support for students with recognised learning difficulties. The school is currently working towards becoming a recognised dyslexia-friendly establishment.
