***The major news outlets made a big deal out of reducing the count to 49 (plus the perp) yesterday, hence my update. Of course the total may rise with the number of serious injuries, that can be dealt with as and when it happens. Revision as of 13:02, 14 June 2016
Please submit error reports only for content that is currently or will imminently appear on the Main Page. For general discussion about the Main Page, kindly use its talk page. |
National variations of the English language have been extensively discussed previously:
|
To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.
- Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
- Offer a correction if possible.
- References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
- Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 06:25 on 23 October 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
- Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
- Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
- No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
- Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
- Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

- Orlando shooting
- Orlando shooting: the article says at least 50 people were killed, the hook here says 49. PhilKnight (talk) 01:44, 14 June 2016 (UTC)
- It seems there were 49 victims, but some totals are also counting the gunman who was killed as well. Not sure what we should go with in the blurb. Jenks24 (talk) 06:26, 14 June 2016 (UTC)

- IUPAC is known as IUPAC (pronounced eye-you-pac), not 'the' IUPAC. You wouldn't say the NASA for another initialism would you? I notice the article has been changed to support this erroneous view and I'll undo that if I'm allowed. Simonfreeman (talk) 10:04, 14 June 2016 (UTC)
- Hmm, if that's correct then we shouldn't use "the". Maybe it would be easier to just use the full name of the organisation? To continue with the NASA example, it's at NASA whereas this article is at International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. Jenks24 (talk) 10:12, 14 June 2016 (UTC)
- I agree that including 'the' sounds odd. Just delete it. Modest Genius talk 12:35, 14 June 2016 (UTC)
- Would that be because you know it's pronounced as a word and not a string of letters? I didn't know that and I would bet most of our readers wouldn't either. My preference is still to use the full name (and therefore keep the "the"). Jenks24 (talk) 12:41, 14 June 2016 (UTC)

Please can we spell out 'MVP', or change the phrasing to e.g. 'Conn Smythe trophy winner'? The initialism is not understood outside North America. The link is a bit of an easter egg already. Modest Genius talk 12:35, 14 June 2016 (UTC)
- I think the term is becoming increasingly more well known outside NA, but I see your point. I'd prefer to go with "Conn Smythe Trophy winner", but would be interested to hear from someone who follows the NHL about which term is most used. Jenks24 (talk) 12:41, 14 June 2016 (UTC)
Errors in the current Did you know...
- "WWII" Can we cange this to either Second World War or World War II: WWII is too lackadaisical for and article, let alone the front page. - SchroCat (talk) 12:50, 14 June 2016 (UTC)
