The 2009 V8 Supercar Championship Series is the eleventh V8 Supercar Championship Series and the thirteenth series in which V8 Supercars have contested the premier Australian touring car title. The season began on March 19 at the Clipsal 500 on the streets of Adelaide and will finish on December 6 at the Homebush Street Circuit. It will consist of 26 races over 14 events which will be held in all states and the Northern Territory of Australia as well as New Zealand. The 50th Australian Touring Car Championship title will be awarded to the winner of the series by the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport.
TeamVodafone Ford driver Jamie Whincup dominates the series having won eight races. Running second, 171 points behind Whincup, is leading Holden driver Will Davison. Other races have been won by Whincup's team mate Craig Lowndes (who won both races at Winton Motor Raceway), Garth Tander (who took Holden's first race win at Symmons Plains Raceway), Tander's team mate Will Davison at Sandown Raceway, Garry Rogers Motorsport racer Michael Caruso at Hidden Valley Raceway and James Courtney at the Townsville 400.
Davison's team mate Tander sits third in the points with Whincup's team mate Lowndes just 13 points behind. The first of the series endurance co-driver races was held at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit and won by Garth Tander and Will Davison in their Holden Racing Team Commodore. TeamVodafone leads the Holden Racing Team in the teams points by 106 points. The next race, the series most famous race the Bathurst 1000, will be held at Mount Panorama Circuit on October 11.
Race calendar
The following events will make up the 2009 series.[1] The Desert 400 originally scheduled to take place on November 5-7 was moved into the 2010 season. A replacement event is yet to be announced.[2]
Teams and Drivers
The following teams and drivers have been confirmed for the 2009 series. These are based in part on [3]
Driver and team changes
Ford announced that from 2009, they will be only offering financial support for Ford Performance Racing and Stone Brothers Racing, having previously provided funding for Triple Eight Race Engineering, Dick Johnson Racing, Britek Motorsport, Paul Cruickshank Racing and Ford Rising Stars Racing. The remaining Ford backed teams will retain limited levels of parts and in-kind support. [citation needed]
Similarly Holden have announced several teams will be cut from their financial support budget, with Garry Rogers Motorsport, Perkins Motorsport, Tasman Motorsport and Rod Nash Racing also losing their direct funding, although like the Ford counterparts will still receive techncial and parts assistance. The new Kelly Racing Team will receive the funding previously given to HSV Dealer Team.[19]
Paul Weel Racing has sold its V8 Supercar franchise to Walkinshaw Performance, and closed at the end of 2008.[20] The franchise will be used to allow the Holden Racing Team to expand to a three car team in 2009, the third car intended for Paul Dumbrell to join Garth Tander and Will Davison is Replacing the retiring Mark Skaife. [21] That driver was later announced to be Will Davison.[22][23] HRT's fourth franchise has been confirmed after the V8 Supercar board gave Walkinshaw Racing approval to acquire the 30th franchise from the former Walden Motorsport team. [24] The team later announced the fourth driver to be David Reynolds.[25]
Also expanding to three cars will be Stone Brothers Racing with Jason Bright folding his own Britek Motorsport operation and utilise one of his teams franchises for SBR's expansion. It is expected that Bright will start the season in a BF Falcon while the teams two new FG Falcons go to Shane Van Gisbergen and Alex Davison is replacing James Courtney.[26][27] Courtney will be joining Steven Johnson at Dick Johnson Racing.[28][29]
The second Paul Weel Racing, (ex-Speed FX Racing) franchise will be used to start a new race team, Team IntaRacing. The new team is based in Southport, utilising Triple 8 Race Engineering sourced BF Falcon and equipment and will be centred around former Britek driver, Marcus Marshall with funding coming from new V8 Supercar sponsor Intabill.[30] The Intabill Access Card sponsorship was pulled from the car shortly before the Hamilton 400 but Marshall vowed the sponsorless team would continue.[31] The team subsequently collapsed and the racing entitlement contract was absorbed by V8 Supercar Australia.
Another new team will be Kelly Racing who will by formed by John and Margaret Kelly utilising the franchises from the defunct HSV Dealer Team running Holden Commodores for their sons, Todd and Rick Kelly. The team plan to run four cars, with the second pair of franchises being sourced from Todd Kelly's 2008 team, Perkins Motorsport.[32] At the teams official launch the identity of the third and fourth drivers were announced as Todd Kelly's 2008 team mate Jack Perkins (supported by Dodo Internet) and Dale Wood.[30] Wood was replaced after the Hidden Valley weekend with Mark McNally taking over the #16 Commodore for the Townsville 400.[33]
Jason Bargwanna returns to a full-time drive joining Greg Murphy at Tasman Motorsport taking the place of Jason Richards. Bargwanna spent a season on the sidelines after WPS Racing folded prior to the 2008 V8 Supercar season. [34] Jason Richards has been confirmed as Andrew Jones' replacement at Brad Jones Racing.[35][36]
Michael Patrizi will join Fabian Coulthard as the drivers of a revamped Paul Cruickshank Racing (PCR) in 2009. PCR has expanded from a one-car team last year to become a two-car team in 2009, which will see Patrizi run an Ausdrill liveried #333 BF Falcon, and Coulthard will run an FG Wilson Security liveried car. The second franchise for PCR to run as a two-car team has been obtained from Jason Bright's team Britek Motorsport. [37]
Paul Morris Motorsport announced the identity of their new driver as graduation Fujitsu Series driver Tim Slade. Slade replaces Paul Morris who announced his retirement at the end of the 2008 season.[38]
Team Kiwi Racing have finalised a deal for the 2009 season that will see the Kiwi team take delivery of their third Paul Morris Motorsport (PMM) car prior to the opening event of the Australian V8 Supercar Championship in Adelaide for the Adelaide Clipsal 500. David John confirmed that TKR will be on the grid at the Clipsal 500 with an Paul Morris Motorsport Holden Commodore.[39] Bankruptcy proceedings involving Team Kiwi Racing team principal, David John[40][41], and uncertainty over the team because of this has left the team unable to prepare adequately for the 2009 season. The franchise will be run on Team Kiwi Racing's behalf by Paul Morris Motorsport for the first two events of the year while the situation is clarified, thus avoiding approximately $150,000 fines for each race meeting they might have been absent, with former Carrera Cup racer Dean Fiore set for driving duties for at least the Clipsal 500 and Formula 1 support races.[42] Since then V8 Supercar Australia have seized TKR's Racing Entitlement Contract in order that it be sold or leased. It is believed Fiore and Paul Morris Motorsport will again run a Commodore in TKR colours at the Hamilton 400.[43] Since the the sale of the Team Kiwi racing entitlement contract has been completed and Dean Fiore now continues to race a PMM Commodore under the banner of his own team, Triple F Racing. The racing number was changed for Triple F's second outing from #021 to #12.
V8 Supercar Australia announced four wildcards entries into the two 'enduro' events (L&H 500 and Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000). The four teams selected from those who made submissions, all competitors in the second-tier Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series, for the entries were Greg Murphy Racing, MW Motorsport, Sieders Racing Team and Sonic Motor Racing Services.[44]
Greg Murphy Racing will race a VE Commodore built by their sister-team Tasman Motorsport with Fujitsu series regular Sam Walter named as one of the drivers.[44] Taz Douglas was later named as the second driver.
The family run Sieders Racing Team have access to the 2006 Bathurst 1000 winning Triple Eight BF Falcon for brothers Colin and David Sieders.[44] Subsequently Colin Sieders withdrew citing imminent surgery and was replaced with V8 Ute Series racer Andrew Fisher.[45]
Sonic Motor Racing Services withdrew their entry. V8 Supercar Australia decided not to allow them to be replaced with another team.[46]
Points system
Points are awarded to any driver that completes 75% of race distance and is running on the completion of the final lap.
