This article presents the albums discography of American popular music singer Madonna. Included are eleven studio albums, three compilations, two remix compilations, three full soundtracks and two live albums. For Madonna's singles discography, see Madonna singles discography.
Madonna has sold a total of 200 million albums worldwide.[1] Since her album debut in 1983, she has released twelve albums which have reached Multi-Platinum status in the United States; Madonna (1983), Like a Virgin (1984), True Blue (1986), Like a Prayer (1989), I'm Breathless (1990), The Immaculate Collection (1990), Erotica (1992), Bedtime Stories (1994), Something to Remember (1995), Evita (1996), Ray of Light (1998), and Music (2000). Both Like a Virgin and The Immaculate Collection have reached Diamond status with 10 million copies sold in the United States.[2]
In 1987 she released two albums which reached Platinum status; the Who's That Girl soundtrack and her first remix compilation You Can Dance. The former contains tracks by other recording artists but is considered a "Madonna" album by Billboard 200 and Warner Bros. Records and features 4 out of 9 tracks performed by Madonna. [3] Evita is also considered a "Madonna" album, as the majority of songs are also performed by her.[4]
Into the millennium she also went to Number One in the Billboard chart with American Life (2003), Confessions on a Dance Floor (2005), and her most recent, Hard Candy (2008). She also released a second greatest hits compilation, GHV2 (2001), her second remix album, Remixed & Revisited (2003), and her very first two live albums; I'm Going to Tell You a Secret (2006), and The Confessions Tour (2007).
Madonna has scored international hits on virtually every continent - North America (USA and Canada), South America (Argentina and Brazil), Europe (UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Scandinavia), Asia (Japan and Taiwan), Oceania (Australia and New Zealand) and Africa (Republic of South Africa).
Recording contracts
Madonna initially had signed a singles contract with Sire Records in 1982, a label owned by Warner Bros. Records. After the success of her first two singles "Everybody" and "Burning Up", she signed an albums deal in 1983.[5] The contract ended in 1990 with the release of her first Greatest Hits release, The Immaculate Collection. In 1991 she signed a new $60 million recording contract and business deal with Warner Bros. and Time Warner and founded Maverick Records which then became her main record company.[6] In 2004, she sold her shares and interest in Maverick to Warner Music Group, after a lawsuit between both companies.[7][8] She remained signed to Warner Bros. under a separate deal, until 2007, when she signed a $120 million, ten year business and recording contract with Live Nation. She will be the founding recording artist for the new music division, Live Nation Artists.[9] Her remaining contract with Warner Bros. ended with her 2008 studio album Hard Candy and the release of Celebration, her third Greatest Hits compilation in 2009.[10]
