The name means the ''Fort of Rheged'' or ''Dun Rheged'' and refers to the [[dark age]] kingdom of [[Rheged]] that existed in this area between the 5th and 8th Centuries. There have been a series of [http://orgs.man.ac.uk/research/dunragit/ excavations] at this site which have shown a long period of occupation. It is possible that this was one of the royal sites used by the kings of Rheged and may have been a royal site used by other kings from [[neolithic]] times.
