Ed Cocks (born 1979)[1] is a member of parliament in the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly representing the Canberra Liberals.

A public servant working for the Health Department, Cocks ran unsuccessfully for the Legislative Assembly at the 2016 ACT election and for the federal seat of Bean in 2019.[2] He ran again for Murrumbidgee at the 2020 ACT election. Although not successful at the election, he was elected in a countback on 20 June 2022 following Giulia Jones's resignation.[3]
On the 4th of July 2022, Ed was appointed by Opposition Leader Elizabeth Lee as Shadow Minister of Mental Health, Jobs and Workplace Affairs and Regulatory Services.[4]
As of 2024, Ed Cocks is the only current member of the ACT Legislative Assembly that uses his first name rather than surname in his official email address. [5]
Career
editEd briefly worked as a DJ. Ed then took a job as a mail courier for the Federal Department of Health, which sparked his interest in pursuing a degree in management at the University of Canberra as a mature-aged student.[6] Ed became interested in politics at university and joined the Liberal Party in 2013.
Political Career
editIn his political career, Ed advocated for a Molonglo Town Centre, leading a grassroots campaign to advocate for the issue.[7] The ACT government recently conceded to the campaign and announced Molonglo to be Canberra’s sixth town centre.[8]
Ed gave a passionate speech about men’s mental health in the ACT Legislative Assembly, receiving some local attention in 2022.[9]
Led by Elizabeth Lee and the Canberra Liberals in the ACT Legislative Assembly, Ed has been a strong advocate for the newly announced $100 million infrastructure investment plan to reinvigorate Canberra suburbs.[10]
