The Government Engineering College , Thrissur (Trichur) known as GECT is the second oldest Engineering College of Kerala. The college was established in 1957. It is also popularly known as Thrissur (Trichur) Engineering College. It is located at Ramavarmapuram, 4 km from the center of Thrissur, Kerala, South India. The foundation stone was laid by the first Prime minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, and inaugurated by the first Chief minister of Kerala, Pattom Thanu Pillai. This is the Golden Jubilee year of the college (GECT GoldenJubilee) GEC Alumni Page.

Affiliation

The college is approved by the AICTE and accredited by the National Board of Accreditation. The College is affiliated to the University of Calicut and is one of the most reputed engineering colleges in India. Before the Calicut University came into existance, it was affiliated to the Kerala University. Edusat facility is available in the college.

Programmes

B.Tech

The B.Tech programs of GECT were started in 1957 with Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. The Under Graduate B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology) Degree programs in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical & Electronics, Chemical, Electronics and Communication, Computer Science, Production cum Plant Engineering and Architecture to about 600 students yearly.

Admissions are purely on a merit basis through CEE, Kerala. A few seats are reserved through Govt. of India nomination. Candidates are required to have passed the higher secondary or equivalent examination conducted by educational boards or departments recognized by the University with at least 50% marks in Mathematics and not less than 50% marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry put together. Alternatively they should have passed the Diploma examination in engineering or any examination accepted by the Government of Kerala as equivalent. The State and Central governments also specify concessions in the qualifying standards for students who belong to communities designated as backward or underprivileged.

M.Tech

The M.Tech programs of GECT were started in 1972. The Postgraduate courses offered are M.Tech (Master of Technology) Degree in(Environmental Engineering (Civil), Production & Industrial Engineering (Mechanical), Power Systems (Electrical), Process Control (Chemical) ), Master of Computer Applications. All PG programs of the College have excellent labs and testing facilities. The Admissions are based on GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) conducted by the IITs and IISc.

Master of Computer Applications (M.C.A.)

Admissions for MCA are through an all Kerala Entrance Exam. The minimum qualification for admission is B.Sc. Comp. Sc, BCA or B.Sc or B.Com degree with Mathematics or Statistics as one of the subjects with not less than 55% marks, excluding languages, in the qualifying examination. Candidates with B.Sc. Comp Sc, BCA , B.Sc/ B.Com degree of the Mahatma Gandhi University or any other degree, accepted as equivalent there to by the Calicut University are alone eligible to apply.

Phd (Doctoral Program)

Doctoral programmes are conducted under the University of Calicut in the Department of Mechanical Engg. and the Department of Chemical Engg.
