Gamplay

Many gameplay elements have been added or revised for this title in the series:

  • Manhattan in the game is far bigger than in Spider-Man 2. The game also features over 20 miles of sewers and subways. This is definite for the next-gen and current-gen games.
  • Spider-Man has a brand new combat system that was worked from the ground up and includes more aerial moves and web attacks. These moves are in all versions of the game. For the Wii, the motion sensors are used during combat: the remote is used as Spider-Man's fists and the nunchuck is used to dodge attacks.
  • In the Wii version, the motion sensors are also used for web-slinging as well as combat. The remote & nunchuck are used as Spidey's left & right hands respectivley. It is possible to switch to left handed mode in the options menu.
  • Part of the game puts the player in control of the Black Suited Spider-Man where Spider-Man's combat system has more brutal moves and a "Rage" system that allows aggressive moves.
  • The game features cineractives that are button sensitive. Game director Chris Archer explained that all the gameplay is playable, including what would be included as a cinematic.
  • The city's subway entrances are scattered across the city. Some are located by the bridges, which will then lead to the location of the other entrances once you explore the rail line. Jumping onto one of the trains is possible, but requires quick timing. It is an excellent way of getting through the subway system quickly, as well as spot other hidden entrances into the sewers.

Cast/Characters

Versions

Vicarious Visions and Treyarch both developed the Spider-Man 3 video game. Because of their different ideas for the game, the versions of the game are different for some consoles.

PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360

The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions are very much the same, with the exception of the exclusive content for the PlayStation 3 Collector's Edition. The PS3 Collector's Edition version will include the ability to play as the New Goblin using the SIXAXIS motion control to maneuver the glider and will also feature additional commentary by Bruce Campbell. This version of the game is developed by Treyarch.

In this version of the game, Spider-Man will start in his usual costume, before switching to the black suit at a certain point. Spider-Man will remain in the black suit until a later point in the game, when the player has managed to rid him of it. Different moves will also be available while in the black suit.[1] After completing the game, the player gains the ability to switch between the two costumes at will.

Wii, PlayStation 2 and PSP

Vicarious Visions developed the game for the Wii,[2] PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable. The PSP will receive the same game design as the PS2 and Wii versions.[1] The Wii version however utilizes its Wii Remote to perform various moves and deliver the sensation of swinging through the city via the Wii Remote and Wii Nunchuk.

It was revealed on IGN that these versions include 2 bonus villains: Morbius, the Living Vampire, and Shriek.[3]

The PSP version will offer an expansive free roaming city. The PSP, PS2, and Wii version have a city that is 2.5 times larger than the city in the PS2 version of Spider-Man 2. According to Cheatcc.com, collecting all 50 spidey emblems allows black suit to be back after beating the game, and controlled rage, and collecting 100 meteorites grants the player to be Venom According to GameStop/EB Games they exclusively carry the Spider-Man 3: Special Edition game for the PS2 which includes: a bonus DVD featuring "Spider-Man 3: The Story Behind the Web", an exclusive interview with Stan Lee, the Spider-Man 3 movie trailers, and a collectible lenticular card with an image from the movie.

Unlike the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, in which Spider-Man's transformations into black-suited Spider-Man are scripted events, the player can switch between the red and black suit at will. This suit powers up Spider-Man's attacks, gives him more health, and allows him to move faster. However, there are drawbacks to this. In the PS2 version of the game, in order to successfully switch back to Spidey's normal costume, you need to complete a button combo, which increases in duration the more you use the symbiote suit (in the Wii version you must swing the nunchuck and Wii Remote in directions shown on the screen). Another down point is that over time, if the player does not switch back to the regular suit while fighting, Spider-Man's Rage (which is represented by a meter and a black haze that builds on the screen) will increase. If the Rage meter is filled, Spider-Man blacks out and wakes up in a completely different part of the city. Also, there might have been a situation (such as a robbery) that he might have missed. When this happens, the city's Satisfaction Rate (their confidence in Spider-Man) will decrease. Excessive use of the black suit for prolonged periods will cause the city to spiral into a state of disrepair. Trash will litter the streets, the skies will turn grey and grow increasingly darker, trees, grass; all vegetation will die, cracks will appear in the pavement, buildings and the black suit darken, and the number of enemies will increase. Ambulances will leave the city, making it harder to find one and heal yourself. There will also be different unlockables compared to the PS3 & Xbox 360 version of the game.[4]

Vicarious Visions stated during an interview with IGN that the Wii version of the game was originally going to allow players' Miis to roam around the city, but they did not have enough time to implement the feature.

The Wii version also contains the easter egg 'Spider-Fart'. When Spider-Man takes off his black suit, there is a timer in the bottom left corner that counts down until; the black suit can be donned again. During this time, players can activate the spider-fart. Pressing the left or right arrows on the D+Pad allows for a subtle 'pfffft'noise followed by a gaseous cloud. There was a rumor that you can unlock venom as a playable character when you collect 100 meteorites, but that was considered false.

Nintendo DS

A version for the Nintendo DS will be released as well. This version, like its Wii cousin, is developed by Vicarious Visions. The DS version uses touch screen gestures for combat, webbing, and interaction. It also lacks cinteractives, and instead focuses on the gameplay. It also features a larger New York like the console versions, albeit slightly smaller. The game is free-roaming, like the PSP version, but is still a side-scroller like the previous Spider-Man DS titles.

The black suit is handled differently as well - when Spider-Man gets angry enough, he transforms into the black-suit automatically and starts to use his new abilities mid fight.[5]

Other formats

There will also be PC and Game Boy Advance versions of the game. The PC version is a port of the Xbox 360 version by developer Beenox, and features Venom as an unlockable character.

Reception/Criticism

Like Spider-Man 3 the movie, the game has received "mixed or average" reviews according to Metacritic where it has a 67 average score. However, Game Rankings shows that the game has a 72% average score with over 38% of reviews giving the game a score of 80% or higher [2]. The reviews have largely criticized the similarities between Spider-Man 3 and its predecessor. The PS2, Wii and PSP version has suffered major criticism, mainly due to graphics issues and the length of the game, in which the story lasts only 3-5 hours.

The PC version has been criticised for its frame rate of 30 FPS and very high minimum system requirements. An e-mail to Activision asking about these gives the reply: "Since the PC version is based on the Xbox 360 version, it was capped at 30 frames per second. Our team tried hard to remove this limitation, but ultimately couldn't, since it compromised the overall stability of the game. Because our team wanted to be true as much as possible to the Xbox 360 version, the PC version consumes vast amounts of ressources [sic] and that's why the minimum system requirements are above average."

GamePro has given the game a 4.25 out of 5 for both the PS3 and Xbox360 versions of the game[6], and a 3.00 for the Wii version[7].

Trivia

References

  • The game features a fictional company "Ditko Chroming" named for Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko
  • One of the combos featured in the game is named Rofl Copter. This combo is named after the commonly used internet slang, ROFL.
  • If sucsessfuly dodge an attack Spider-Man might say "kinda' like taking the football away before you kick it, huh?" a reference to The Peanuts Gang.
  • When Spider-Man says his name is hyphenated is an inside joke, joking about how most people usally spell his name without the hyphen.
  • Kraven asking Spider-Man what he'd like his tomb to stay is a refernce to the Spider-Man storyline Kraven's Last Hunt.

Miscellaneous

  • Video game magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly was slated to have a worldwide exclusive story on the game for its October 2006 issue, going so far as to promote the exclusive in the previous issue. The issue instead shipped with a Guitar Hero II lead story, and a note from the Editor-in-Chief Dan Hsu stating that readers should "blame [director] Sam Raimi" for the change in content. A similar story was instead featured in the April 2007 issue of Game Informer.
  • Despite Kirsten Dunst's absence from the voice-cast due to her busy schedule, the game has the highest amount of the movie cast reprising their roles for the game in the trilogy.
  • Despite Harry Osborn being in the 2 previous games, this is the first time that James Franco has voiced the character.
  • Singer Paula DeAnda contributed 5 songs into the game's soundtrack, including "When It Was Me" from the film's soundtrack. RBD contributed their track "Save Me" into the game from their album, Rebels. This song is featured only in the PS3, X360 & DS versions.
  • The Playstation 3 version of the game has the "Spider-Man" writing on the top of the box, rather than along the side like the other versions. This may be because the "Playstation 3" writing bears a striking similarity to the "Spider-Man" writing i.e. the font is almost the same style

Quotes/Quips in game

Spider-Man: Just think of me as karma in a red-and-blue suit.

Spider-Man: Let's start giving out shirts. You know ones that say, "Spider-Man kicked my butt and all I got was this lousy T-shirt."

Black Suited Spider-Man: Thanks for playing our little game. As a parting gift you get a mild concussion!"

Black Suited Spider-Man: Your lucky that didn't hit cause then...I'd be annoyed.

Mary Jane Watson: You should start charging tourists for rides.
Spider-Man: No thanks. With my luck I'd get one of those passengers who stick gum under the seat.

New Goblin: You can't run away from the past. The Green Goblin almost killed you. I'm gonna finish the job.
Spider-Man: Nice suit, Harry. But, don't you hate wearing hand-me-downs?

Spider-Man: And remember, when you tell this story in jail, Spider-Man is hyphenated. Not one word. Common mistake.

Spider-Man: What the hell happened here?

Kraven: What do you want it to say on your tombstone? How about "Here lies Spider-Man - Slain by the Hunter."

Spider-Man: This is New York City, so I'm required by law, I gotta ask, "you talkin' to me?"

Shriek: There's a little darkness in everyone's soul. Even yours.

Spider-Man: Good news, you'll be on tomorrow's front page. Bad news, it'll be a picture of me beating the daylights out of you.

Venom: Like looking in a mirror, ain't it? Only I'm bigger, and better.
Spider-Man: I bet I could sue you for copyright infringement and win.

Venom: [about the black suit] God! How could you give this up?
Spider-Man: Not sure about the name, but that face sure rings a bell.

Flint Marko: [after Spider-Man saves his daughter] You saved her. Thanks Spider-Man. I'm sorry. I didn't want to fight you. I swear. It's just that Venom, well he said he'd kill her if I didn't help him. I had no choice.
Spider-Man: Well she's safe now. That's all that matters.

Flint Marko: [while fighting Spider-Man] Now you're just an itsy bitsy spider!
Spider-Man: This should be a happy ending. I beat the villain, brought a family back together, and got the girl. But it's not that easy. Being Spider-Man always comes with a price. And today, that price was a steep one. What keeps me going is Uncle Ben's words: "With great power...comes great responsibility." In the end people need heroes. As tough as it gets some days, I have to fight on. Maybe the best way to honor the people that I love, is to never stop being your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
