Chip Merlin

William "Chip" F. Merlin, Jr. is the founder and president of the Merlin Law Group, P.A..[1] He founded the firm in 1985 to provide representation for and advocacy of insurance policyholders.[2][3] Merlin Law Group is one of the largest national firms and its team provides legal services to insurance policyholders in disputes with their insurers.[3][4][5][6] The firm employs attorneys licensed to practice in 22 states with 10 offices around the U.S.[7] They specialize in handling claims following disasters such as hurricanes, fires, tornadoes, earthquakes, dust storms, hailstorms, and mudslides.[8][2] Thanks to his policyholder work, Merlin has been called the “master of disaster” and the “Babe Ruth of Hurricane lawyers.”[8][7]

Bar admittance and recognition

Merlin was admitted to the bar in 1983 in Florida and in present day is admitted to practice in a number of other states and at the federal level in the U.S. Supreme Court.[9] States include Florida, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Mississippi, New York, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee, and the District of Columbia.[1]

Merlin has been listed as a Super Lawyer from 2007 to 2024.[1] He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Florida Association of Public Adjusters for his advocacy on behalf of policyholders, and the AV-Preeminent rating by Martindale-Hubbell in 2011, 2012, and 2013.[1][7] He was listed among Florida Trend magazine’s Legal Elite from 2004 to 2012.[1] In 2002, he received an award for Outstanding Amicus Brief of the Year.[1] He is listed in the Insurance Law section of the Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers.[9]

Merlin attended the University of Florida Levin College of Law.[1][9][10] While there, he was the executive editor of the university’s law review.[1]

Personal

Merlin is a runner and has run over twenty-six marathons.[11] He is a competitive sailor and the owner of the monohull racing yacht Merlin.[12][13][14] He is the author of “Pay Up, Preventing a Disaster with Your Own Insurance Company.”[7]

Merlin frequently speaks on insurance litigation, public adjusting, and ethical standards in the industry.[15] He has been a guest commentator on CNN and Fox News.[7]
