Kolilakkam (transl. Shockwave) is a 1981 Indian Malayalam-language drama film directed by Vijayanand, produced by A.Sheriff and written by Akhtar Mizra.It a remake of 1976 filim Waqt. The film stars Jayan, Madhu, M.G Soman, Sumalatha, Sukumaran, K.R Vijaya, Balan K Nair in lead roles. It pioneered the concept of films with multiple stars, starting a trend followed by other films. The film took the top spot at the box office in 1981.

Plot

Prabhakaran ([[Balraj Sahni]) is a wealthy businessman living with his wife Laxmi ([[Achala Sachdev]) and three little sons, who were born on same date, same month but few years apart each other. On their birthday, Prabhakaran is visited by a Pandit, a well-known astrologer who advises him not to be proud of his wealthy lifestyle or be too optimistic about the future as the actions of "time" is unpredictable. Prabhakaran ignores his advice and is busy making plans of becoming even more wealthier. That night, as he is discussing his future plans with Laxmi, a sudden attact of some smugglers and their leader R.K Menon (Balan K Nair) who is Prabhakaran enemy enters their house and captures Laxmi and the children.Prabhakaran tries to save them but is hit by the smugglers and thrown away to the outyard.Laxmi ran with her sons.After regaining consciousness, he discovers that his house is destroyed and his family is gone.Laxmi plans to leave the city and takes a train with her son's.When the youngest one is crying of food she takes him to buy food and tells the other two to stay their,but due to several circumstances she cannot go back to the train;The elder one Raju goes out for search of her and is kidnapped by some goons.while the middle-born son Appu is adopted from the train by a rich couple. Elsewhere, the youngest son is still with Laxmi who thinks Prabhakaran died in the attack and the two continue living in poverty. Prabhakaran finds Raju with the goons,he traces the goons to take Raju back Frustrated, he chokes the one of goon to death and is arrested by the police. As the police drive away with Prabhakaran, Raju is shown running on the streets alone and RK finds him and takes him away.

Several years later, Rajan (Jayan) is shown as a sophisticated thief working for RK. (Balan K Nair). He steals the expensive necklace of a beautiful rich girl named Sumathy (Sumalatha) but returns it to her upon learning that it was her birthday gift. He falls in love with her and decides to give up crime for her. However, things take a turn when a spoilt rich boy named Kumar (M.G Soman) enters Sumas life and attempts to woo her. Meanwhile, Prabhakaran is released from jail and is by his neighbour that his long-lost wife Laxmi is in Delhi. He travels there but is informed that her son Ravi (Sukumaran) has taken her to Mumbai for a treatment as she is diagnosed with cancer. He arrives over there in order to search for his family. Elsewhere, Sumathy falls in love with Kumar and the two decide to get married, infuriating Rajan. On the night before their engagement, he enters an asleep Kumars house to murder him but finds his childhood photograph. Upon seeing it, Rajan realises that Kumar is his long-lost brother and leaves from his house. Kumar and Sumas's marriage is finalized. However, Sumas parents tell Kumar's foster parents that they wish to break off Sumas engagement upon discovering that Kumar is of unknown parentage and religion. Heartbroken, Kumar leaves his house after an argument with his foster sister Usha (Urmila) over dating Ravi who works as a Driver at their house in order to arrange money for Laxmi's surgery.However one day, RK menons drunk employee Ramu (Selvarajan) misbehaves with a women over the street and gets arrested by the police and he reveals all secrets about RK making him angry. Later that night, Ramu gets into a fight with RK in a drunken state and in self-defense, RK ends up stabbing Balbir fatally from his knife. He decide to frame Rajan for the murder in order to cover up his crime. Ravi witnesses RK dragging Ramus corpse to Rajan's house because he had been befriended Rajan he promised to give money for Laxmi's surgery. Ravi is seen by RK and is captured.Rajan also arrives their questioning RK about the murder.But RK falses him by telling that Ravi had murdered Ramu to frame Rajan and to take his properties.Rajan behaves like he belived RKs lie and RK tells him to beat Laxmi with a chatta but he introduces himself as her eldest son and Kumar as his middle-born son to Laxmi. The two emotionally reunite with Prabhakaran with Laxmi and Ravi. In the end, after certain fights with RK they wins.

  • During the Malayalam remake of the film in 1981: Kolilakkam, (Shockwave) popular iconic Malayalam action superstar Jayan died during the last scenes of the movie while attempting a helicopter stunt, causing the helicopter to fall down and crash while he was holding on to the rail. His sudden death made him a legendary superstar in the Malayalam film industry.
