The course is the first in a sequence covering gender and sexuality in world civilizations. The course covers issues such as sex and gender, masculinities, feminisms, the scientific construction of sex and gender, gender and psychology, and trans issues and narratives in their global and historical contexts. I would like to use a wikipedia project as their final assignment. Since this is a core class, students come from all different majors. I would like them to choose topics related to their various academic interests and/or majors related to gender and sexuality to explore, expand, and edit. I also want to use Wikipedia articles and editing practices as a tool in the classroom to discuss the "gender gap," implicit/explicit bias, and public humanities. I think students writing for Wikipedia will help them think about their ideas and writing in a global context, mirroring the academic goals of the class.
