"Say no to flagged revisions"

edit

Fyi, already archived, unless you still want to keep it there. :) —La Pianista (TC) 04:02, 1 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I know, and I voted in it, but I still want to express my opposition to that abomination. Especially since the issue doesn;t seem to be totally resolved yet. Nutiketaiel (talk) 14:03, 2 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
I thought of keeping mine, as well, but I wanted to make it obvious that I was keeping up with the circumstances of my opinion. I felt too strongly about it to give the impression of neglect. —La Pianista (TC) 21:21, 2 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Perfectly valid. Of course, you could always express your strong opinions with my brand new userbox just for the occasion, which does not link to the archived page. I kept the other one on my talk page because I wanted to express my opinion on both pages, and the tab one looked more aesthetically pleasing on top of the table of contents box. Nutiketaiel (talk) 21:25, 2 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
That's a little "too" deep for me. Bring about the end of Wikipedia? Woah. Not that I'm saying that it is false... SimonKSK 21:27, 2 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, it's not for everyone. I saw a milder one here, but it was too wishy washy for my tastes (possibly because it failed to refer to flagged revisions as an abomination). It doesn't even say "oppose," just that you "don't support." Nutiketaiel (talk) 21:30, 2 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
(e/c)Actually, I like it. Now I don't think flagged revs will actually bring about the Wiki-pocalypse by itself, but I think plenty of conflict and loss of freedom could come as a result. It'll be the first tap of a chain of dominoes, which is one of the things I fear in particular if it is actually used.
PS - that rumor's growing more intimidating by the day. First agreeing at MOTD, next persuading each other to change our votes, now exchanging userboxes and sharing strong views on a highly controversial topic...yow. —La Pianista (TC) 21:35, 2 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Maybe I'll Make one. SimonKSK 21:36, 2 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
I smell socks. SimonKSK 21:37, 2 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
It is one of the early signs of Wiki-gnarök. First, flagged revisions. Then, someone attacks the most beautiful of the gods with some mistletoe. Then, the Fenris Wolf and Jormangandr get free and destroy Asgard. Finally, Surtr burns Midgard to the ground. It's all there, black and white, in the prophecies of the Prose Wiki. Very scary.
In all seriousness, I think these flagged revisions are so dangerous because they look benign. They seem like something to just help prevent libel and ensure quality control, but they're the first step down that slippery slope away from our principles.
P.S.- It is getting kind of scary. It's OK, though. With you around, I'll face my fears. Or does that just make it worse? Nutiketaiel (talk) 21:47, 2 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
P.P.S.- I'm not a sock.  :-P Nutiketaiel (talk) 21:47, 2 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Most beautiful? I smell socks and beer. Are you EUI, Nuki? JK SimonKSK 21:50, 2 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
100% my thoughts as well, ye weaver of tales. Only one problem, though. I am not one of those gods. If I were though, no doubt I would still be the most beautiful. ;)
PS - That does make it worse, but at least I'll have a shoulder to cry on at MOTD if the going gets tough. And I believe my saying so will make circumstances even worse, but there is a slight chance they shall find compassion inside their gelid hearts to deign discover a shred of pity for two stranded souls in a barren sea of darkness that is our doomed existence in this hell that is life. If this sounds queer, keep in mind that it is midnight now, and late hours have the same effects as two bottles of wine and a tequila, Tex-Mex style. Hic!La Pianista (TC) 06:01, 3 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

(indent) What does Flagged Revisions have to do with Wiki-ragnarok, out of curiosity? Methinks you're making a slippery slope out of the molehill. bibliomaniac15 06:08, 3 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Molehills can be slippery. Just ask the mole, once you identify him.
Anyhow, it's just our POV, Biblio. We don't want any drama here (seeing as you disagreed at the vote), but it's our belief that this is the first step towards a complete desecration of WP's core values, starting with the "free-to-edit" principle. Nutiket will probably be around tomorrow to answer for you, if you like. —La Pianista (TC) 06:14, 3 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Does any more need to be said? —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 06:22, 3 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'll always be there if you need a shoulder, La Pianista, though I highly doubt that they will take any pity on we star-crossed lovers.
As for you, Bibliomaniac, my references to Wiki-gnarok were largely poetic license (except for the part about La Pianista being the most beautiful- that's literal truth). I really don't think a giant wolf and a giant snake are going to eat the Article Namespace, nor do I think that a fire giant of Muspelheim is going to burn down the User Namespace. What I do think, however, is that flagged revisions will make the wiki less accessible to newcomers and anonymous editors, since their edits won't go through until approved by someone else. Putting aside the backlog that this will create (and it will; just ask the Germans), it will discourage participation. New content will be less forthcoming. All practical considerations aside, though, my greatest objection is philosophical. This is supposed to be a free encyclopedia, edited by everyone. That is one of our core principles. It is part of what attracted me to the project in the first place; it's why I like it. Does it open the door to vandalism? Yes, of course. It's just something you have to deal with, and hope that the thin blue line can protect us. No, that's not right- you do more than hope- you jump right in and do some protecting yourself. You stick one of those Wiki-Defconometers on your userpage and when it turns red, you roll your sleeves up and start recent change patrolling for all you're worth. There will always be vandalism. The answer isn't to kick our core principles to the curb- the answer is to step up our efforts. We cannot succeed by making the wiki less free. So, yeah, I do think that flagged revisions are an abomination unto Wikipedia and that their implementation will be the beginning of the end for us- contributions will scale down slowly over time until, eventually, it's just Jimbo looking around saying "where did everybody go?" Because, if everything has to be approved before it goes up, we're really not Wikipedia anymore; we might as well all go work at Britannica. Of course, by that point, maybe we'll all be editing at Nutipedia. Nutiketaiel (talk) 12:57, 3 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Or Citizendium, for that matter. —La Pianista (TC) 18:11, 3 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
I was thinking the same thing, but I didn't want to name names (it doesn't count with Britannica; since they're a paper encyclopedia, they can't get on the internet and see it and get their feelings hurt). Nutiketaiel (talk) 19:05, 3 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
No, I don't mean that as an insult to Citizendium - it's just a normal wiki, and a really good one at that. Wikipedia is simply supposed to be different, to be 100% (or at least 95%) free to the public in all respects. —La Pianista (TC) 20:25, 3 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
First of all, flagged revisions won't be enacted for every article. Like semi-protection, it's on a case-for-case basis. So it doesn't violate the "free encyclopedia" pillar in the same way that protection doesn't violate it either. The easiest way to stop vandalism is to prevent it from appearing. We already have protection for that; flagged revisions are merely another step to prevent BLP issues or vandalism from hitting the main article. If I am not incorrect, the ability to mark "approved" revisions is bundled with rollback. Finally, there is an additional incentive for creating an account in that all users, autoconfirmed or new, are able to see the most recent change, similar to how semi-protection gives an incentive to sign up and edit with an account. bibliomaniac15 21:11, 3 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
It's not that I have a problem with flagged revisions on its own - it seems very practical, I will allow for that. It's only what it signifies, and the direction it points toward. It seems to be the start of what might make Wikipedia "just another wiki." In short, it's not the idea itself, it's the message. —La Pianista (TC) 21:17, 3 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Firstly, I've seen a couple of statements that say that flagged revisions will be applied to every BLP article, which would be a big problem for me. Secondly, I don't think we should be penalizing people any more than we already do for not creating an account; there is nothing wrong with anon editing, and plenty of IP addresses make very good, substantive contributions. I do agree with La Pianista on the philosophical issue- this is a step in the wrong direction for our project. Finally, I think that however this starts, it will end up being expanded over time to include more and more of the encyclopedia until every article is set up for flagged revisions. Hense the slippery slope. I'm not saying that it's inevitable that that will happen, but I think it's likely, and I'd rather not take the first step down that road. Say no to falgged revisons! Chubbennaitor 17:16, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Uh, yep. See Wikipedia talk:Flagged revisions/Trial/Votes. —La Pianista (TC) 17:22, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Why does everyone vote against Flagged revisions? It's perfectly fine. It would prevent the scandals that happened (such as saying that alive people are dead). (Note: If you don't know this, see the Flagged Revisions article on the Wikipedia Signpost.) Even Jimbo Wales vouches for it. (Though the discussion on his talk page has been archived) What's the opposition's argument? That it would go against Wikipedia's policy that "anyone can edit?" That's incorrect, since everyone can edit every page (except for semi-protected/full-protected ones); the Flagged revisions people just analyze whether the edits were vandalism, false information, or not. I think it is a worthy and useful tool that can help us in the future. MathCool10 Sign here! 00:49, 19 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Also: There is a whole group of people watching the backlog of edits to flagged pages. I doubt anyone would have to wait for a long time (since we aren't adding flagged revisions to every page) unless they were editing a flagged article during the night, and even then, there are still people watching the backlog. The wait is not a problem because of this. MathCool10 Sign here! 00:53, 19 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Fyi, MathCool, Jimbo himself openly expressed the fact that he did not want anything implemented just because "Jimbo said so." Also, my problem is not whether or not "anyone can edit it"; it's more of flagged revisions' antagonism to our core principle as a "live" wiki. I understand the practical viewpoint you offer, but, as I have said, my main concern involves what this implies. It implies a turn away from our core values, almost like an infringement on our Constitution, figuratively. I find an issue in the sentiment, not the action. The general message this is sending is disturbing to me. There is philosophic value behind just the pragmatic side of things, even on the Internet. —La Pianista (TC) 02:46, 19 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
So, is it going to pass? I think it did, but I don't see it being implemented yet. MathCool10 Sign here! 19:14, 21 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

WP:RFA

edit

I know I already mentioned this before, but I think you would have a good chance of doing well on WP:RFA, and it's not just because of your edit count. You have a majority of edits to mainspace, and plus you have done a lot of reviews. Maybe I haven't noticed, but you might want to nominate some (more) articles for GA, FA, and DYK. This will increase your chance of doing well in WP:RFA. Overall, I think you have quite a decent chance of doing well in WP:RFA. MathCool10 Sign here! 03:39, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Trust me MathCool - we've been over this a lot before! —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 03:53, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
I would tread on cautious ground right now. I don't doubt La Pianista's skills, but I do not foresee an RFA as advantageous at the moment. bibliomaniac15 04:17, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Agreed (I meant to imply that in my edit before, but now that I reread it...)
I love ya Pianista, but not yet. :) —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 04:46, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
I think you need to reread your posts more often. :P bibliomaniac15 04:58, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'd block you, but I don't think I would be able to get the community support for a ban. :) bibliomaniac15 05:10, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Awite, listen here, folks:
  1. By no means do I have the slightest bit of a grudge against Ed or Biblio, if you are afraid that I'm offended or anything of the sort (I'm too much of a strong lady for that ;P ). In fact, I agree with you %100, and am grateful for your honest opinions. I love you both all the more for that.
  2. Also by no means do I look forward to being an admin anytime soon. One, is because I rarely participate in AfDs, and I myself do not feel experienced enough for the job. Two, as one of my userboxes says, is that I am a WikiSloth. I don't know what I'd do with all that responsibility. ;)
  3. And I am very touched by the repeated offers by all of you to nom me for adminship. Nom nom nom. At least some people out there don't explicitly hate me for what I do. Thanks, everyone, again and again. —La Pianista (TC) 16:34, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Adminship is overrated. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 18:03, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Eh? Then why is it that the 'crats and admins come out of their cubbyholes every time I get a talk page section header with "RfA" in it? :P
Just kidding. I agree with Julian 100% - adminship is more of a responsibility than a title. It's just another form of community service, which is why I like the idea of adminship, but not so hungry for it. —La Pianista (TC) 20:57, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
OK, understood.
@ Ed: what do you mean by "a lot before"? This is only the second time. And also, please be WP:CIVIL towards Biblio.
Thanks everyone! Cheers, MathCool10 Sign here! 03:24, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
A lot before, meaning not just you. I've got an offer from Ed himself, then User:Blooded Edge, then User:What!?Why?Who?, then you twice.
And no need to be civil - he's WP:EUI. :P Just kidding - we're all just joking around, MC. "Shut up"s basically add up to "I love you, man" around here.La Pianista (TC) 03:46, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Bored

edit

Pianista, I'm bored. Could you suggest anything for me to do, please? And I know absolutely NOTHING about clasical music, so please don't ask me to do something connected to that. Thanks! :) Queenie Talk 18:53, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Bored on Wikipedia?! :O
How about some runs at WP:Help desk or WP:RD? Or just click "random article" and see what you like. Or, you could just skim through the page at WP:Queen - currently inactive, but I'm sure they'll have a list of open tasks. Or you could go to the WP:Community portal and see what catches your eye. Hope this helps, —La Pianista (TC) 20:55, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
OK...... Loads of suggestions there. Will try them all. Thanks!! :) Queenie Talk 21:12, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

LOL... I think it's the tank pics that are creating problems, not the interest in military history Delete all the pics, or upload them to commons. Pay rise guaranteed within two weeks. I dunno know, I'll try, but some of them are scans of his tank books. That might need fair use. SimonKSK 00:49, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hold up. Scans are bad unless those are the only known photos of a tank/ship/animal that is gone/no examples left/extinct. Otherwise, no "fair use" claim can be made, because a free photo could conceivably be taken. All photos that were taken by your Dad would be ok though assuming that he would release them under a free license...—Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 01:00, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Meaning, I would be pretty liberal with the painkillers and not so much with Abilify. And just because I take swimming extracurriculars does not mean I can become another useless babe off Baywatch. Nor does it mean that I can wear Chanel No. 5 and fancy ballgowns for some Superbowl commercial so Granny can see me on digital TV. And just because I stood at 5'7" when I was in eighth grade does not mean that I should have become the first white girl to join the Harlem Globetrotters. It does mean I can rip Shostakovich to shreds and pwn Liszt like the next Horowitz, though, maybe go on to play at Carnegie. —La Pianista (TC) 02:19, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hey there! Happy New Year and pre-Valentine's day. How's life?

Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :D 03:56, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Life is amazing. Busy, of course (since it's my fault I have piano dreams), but otherwise very, very fun.
And it's equally amazing to hear from yourself. It's been ages, eons, whatever you wish to call it. I was such a n[][]b back then, lucky to not have been bitten (or, if I was, I was perhaps too dull to see it). Thanks again for all your help, and that of countless others, as well. You're part of the influence for my FireFox craze...I don't get some of my IE friends anymore. :D
So how's life for you? —La Pianista (TC) 04:00, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Awesome, I'm so happy that it's goin' well for you! How go the piano studies? I'm assuming you're taking theory or something of the sort? And don't mention it, I'm always down to helping someone get their... wings? Flippers?
As for life for me, it's pretty awesome! Final year of highschool, applied to universities; got in to the one I live next to, but I'm really aiming for Carleton University to become a journalist and influence the weak-willed plebs of this puny planet spread knowledge! And I've discovered how reckless of a driver I am, but only in really wide-open parking lots with lots of snow begging for me to use my e-brake on.

Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :D 04:05, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Piano studies? Well, since you asked...
I'm kidding - I'll keep it brief. The piano prof is excellent at the university here (won't say which, since it can compromise me. ;) ) I'm eventually looking forward to Julliard. A far-fetched idea, true, but my prof and family have faith in me, so I'll give it a shot someday. Theory exams, in fact, were just finished a few weeks ago, but the results haven't come in quite yet.
Journalist! I wanted to be one when I was a kid, until I somehow tapped in to my inner nerd and fell in love with the ebony and ivory. At first, my relatives thought that was just a kid's thing, but I took to it well, and here I am. :) —La Pianista (TC) 04:10, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Wow! From what I know that's a really prestigious school! Well, add me to the list of people who have faith in you! I've never heard you play, you may think, but from your devotion I can guess you're a practical virtuoso! :) I wish I had stuck to piano, to be honest... got to about grade 7 and then got intrigued by guitar. I still sometimes sit down at my upright and sound out some nice little songs. Maybe after high school I'll go back into it; it's truly a beautiful instrument. Ever heard Before Dawn by Isaac Shepard? It's contemporary, not classical, but it's a wonderful piece. Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :D 04:15, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

(e/c)Aw, shucks, it's nothing, honestly. >.> You haven't heard me play, remember that - you have no obligation to say such rash, importunate things! :P
Many people I talk to say the same thing. Even my dentist literally grabbed me by the shoulders and told me not to quit. He said that he always regretted never having a quiet night to play any Chopin or Schubert for himself after a long day of work.
Isaac Shepard. Nope, never heard, sorry. Don't laugh, but the closest I've ever come to actual Contemporary is my Mom's old BeeGee CDs...
I said don't laugh. ;)
(after) Aw, come, Eddie, be civil. I could just as well say "Aw, another WWII-obsessed mental?" —La Pianista (TC) 04:22, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Don't worry about Eddie; the poison should set in in a few hours. Meanwhile, as for Isaac Shepard; here's a YouTube link of his piano piece (sound, no video). You may scoff at it with all of your cultured piano knowledge (just kidding! :P) but I find it very relaxing. This from a guy who named his user account after a Metallica album, eh?
P.S. WWII is cool! I mean, cool to study. I disapprove highly of war and such. Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :D 04:27, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Wow. That is very beautiful. I'll see if I can find the score. No, honestly, I will. I look forward to learning that one. This, albeit more "cultured" has the same effect for me - not a very difficult one - learned it last year.

I think the sheet music is located in the video description; this should be it. There's also a higher quality MP3 file in there (virus free, I checked). It would be great if you learned it though!
As for Barenboim's rendition of Aria, wow. Cultured or not, I still love the sounds of fingers tickling ivory! Or whatever expression them pianists use...
And yeah, my interests are really widespread. Everything from ballet, opera, classical music, girls, biking, computers, gaming, swimming, playing old LPs, guitar, fixing broken things, lockpicking (not illegally :P)... I'm the typical unsettled teenager with a mind that won't rest, haha. Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :D 04:42, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

edit

Hello Pianista. I tried the sig you typed out for me, and unfortunately, I get this message:Invalid raw signature. Check HTML tags. --Crackthewhip775 (talk) 00:43, 9 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes - that was because I tried to save space and left some tags unclosed. Would you be all right with a less fancy signature, perhaps without the font? I can retain the colors, though. —La Pianista (TC) 00:51, 9 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Ok. --Crackthewhip775 (talk) 00:55, 9 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Sorry - I've discovered that the colors aren't feasible, either. Do you have any other ideas in mind? —La Pianista (TC) 00:57, 9 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Sorry I took so long to reply, my browser was acting like a jerk, so I had to switch. I didn't really have any other ideas in mind, but maybe you could combine the white and grey colors from here? --Crackthewhip775 (talk) 01:22, 9 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
No problem - happens to me all the time. :)
Actually, I should have been more specific - there wasn't a problem with the colors chosen, it was the fact that you had a color for each letter. Could you think of a design that uses fewer colors? There is a character limit to how long a signature can be, you see, and I have to comply with that. —La Pianista (TC) 01:28, 9 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'm not terribly picky, so you can be creative with either of the color combinations. :) --Crackthewhip775 (talk) 01:40, 9 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

@ Icy, way up there: Well, part from the wrist, part from the arm. My prof is crazy about making octaves from the arm, not the fingers. Not glissando - strike each one, slow practice. It's a good way to fix the horror at Scherzo No. 3 (Chopin) (I don't play it, but I'm trying - aka, failz).
