After completing a degree in classical music at Oxford university, he first arrived on the UK music scene as part of the British funk band "UK Players", whose 1982 album " No way out" was released on A&M records in 1982. Changing record labels to RCA in 1983 brought him into contact with the RCA duo "[[Eurythmics]]", who he joined as keyboard player for their world tour in 1984.
 
His long working relationship with Eurythmics in the 1980s included many tours and recording projects,including the "Revenge" and " We too are one" albums, and he was also co-writer of the Eurythmic songs "[[When tomorrow comes]]" and "Revival". Other songs he has written include "Sleep like a child", recorded by Joss Stone on her album " Mind body and soul". He was also co-writer of the UK hit " You're History" by Shakespeare's Sister. Other songs he has written have been recorded by Jeffrey Osborne ,Kiki Dee, [[Bananarama]].
 
His orchestral arrangements include songs on albums by Belinda Carlisle ("Live your life be free"), Beth Hart ("Screaming for my supper").
