Line 25:
When Ludwig's parents were married in 1979, their marriage did not conform with the laws of the House of Wittelsbach. Ludwig was born with the surname Prinz von Bayern, but was actually not officially recognised as a prince by the royal house - although he was frequently styled as if he were. On March 3, 1999, the laws of the House of Wittelsbach were changed, the marriage of Ludwig's parents was recognised as dynastic, and Ludwig was officially recognised as a Prince of Bavaria by the royal house.

Ludwig is presently fourth in line of succession to be head of the house of Wittelsbach - after Prince Max, Duke in Bavaria (younger brother of the current head Franz, Duke of Bavaria), Ludwig's grandfather Ludwig, and Ludwig's father Luitpold).

As a great-great-grandson of Archduchess Maria Theresia of Austria-Este, Ludwig is also in line of succession to the Jacobite thrones of England, Scotland, France and Ireland.
