"I beheld the last combat on the slopes of Orodruin, where Gil-Galad died, and Elendil fell, and Narsil broke beneath him; but Sauron himself was overthrown, and Isildur cut the Ring from his hand with the hilt-shard of his father's sword, and took it for his own."
Elrond, The Fellowship of the Ring

Isildur was a Númenorean prince who fled to Middle-earth with his father, Elendil, and his younger brother, Anarion. He ruled the kingdom of Gondor from Minas Ithil together with his brother, who ruled from Minas Anor. He fought with Sauron with the Last Alliance of Elves and Men, and though his father and brother perished, he survived and cut the Ring from Sauron's hand. Ignoring the advice of Elrond and Cirdan, Isildur took the Ring as his own instead of destroying it. Later in life, Isildur was ambushed by orcs; putting the Ring on, he tried to swim across a nearby river to safety. The Ring betrayed him and slipped from his finger, and the orcs shot him with arrows from the riverbank. Therefore, the Ring was given the name "Isildur's Bane" in the North. Though Isildur was killed, his son Valandil had remained in Rivendell, and there the heirs of Isildur were raised until Aragorn II son of Arathorn II finally reclaimed the Crown of Gondor at the end of the War of the Ring.
