Sommario
Summary
A brief discussion of the “constant stretch history” concept introduced by Noll, and of the “perpetual rheological history” concept introduced by Oldroyd, shows that these are essentially equivalent. The physical meaning which is generally attached to the Deborah number implies that its value is zero for constant stretch history flows. These are a more restricted class than all steady flows, and thus a definition of the Deborah number is given, to be used in the analysis of steady flows, which fulfills the requirement of yielding a zero value when applied to a constant stretch history flow pattern.
