On the number of defective system's components or erroneous bits in binary coding

Abstract

It is shown that indicator variables make the determination of stochastic parameters concerning the number of defective components of technical systems or erroneous bits of a binary code not only conceptually but also computationally simpler. Specifically, it is easily shown that the mean number of defective components or erroneous bits of a binary code is always the sum of the components' unrealibilities or unavailabilities or the bit error probabilities.
