The strength of adhesive joints using the theory of cracks

Abstract

Adhesive joints are in general subjected to combined normal and shearing stresses. Proceeding from the known constancy of fracture energy due to normal loading, it is shown that adhesive joints can be analyzed by utilizing the elastic analysis of non-homogeneous media in which the ratio of normal and shear stress appears as the important parameter. This dependence is determined by three separate experimental configurations.
