„David and I worked together to design a curriculum to teach students to code using the popular video game Minecraft and subsequently analyze students collaboration through gameplay and learning as they completed the curriculum. While I only worked in the TIILT lab for one quarter as an undergrad before graduating, during which we conducted sessions with students at a local middle school, David completed all the data collection, analysis, paper writing and presentation of our findings. He was wonderful to work with, provided feedback and asked helpful, prompting questions. He taught me how to design and conduct a research experiment when I’d never worked in a lab before and how we would analyze the data. Even after I graduated and left the lab, David provided me with regular updates about the resulting paper and conferences he was presenting our study at. At a certain point during the experiment, I realized the original question I set out to answer was not going to yield the quality results I’d hoped for in such a limited time. I’d underestimated how long it would take the middle school students to grasp basic technical concepts and we did not have enough time for them to reach the technical competency required in order to fully complete the curriculum at the level required to answer our hypothesis. David jumped in and looked at our data, proposing that instead of scrapping everything, we find a new hypothesis to answer based on the same criteria and data we had available to us. He’d recently read a study on how children collaborate and the types of collaboration and suggested we use that as a framework to analyze our data. This is exactly what we did. David saved the day! I loved working with David and learned so much from him. I would welcome the chance to work with him again.“

Making the maker movement more inclusive: Lessons learned from a course on accessibility in making
International Journal of Child-Computer Interaction
A study of the iterative design and implementation of a course on accessibility design for making. We outline the course’s theoretical and operationalized design over two iterations and analyze student projects in light of our learning objectives. Our results point to recommendations for both teaching accessibility design and for creating a more accessible maker movement for people with disabilities.

Crafting Game-Based Learning: An Analysis of Lessons for Minecraft Education Edition

In this work-in-progress paper, we share our analysis of a large corpus of lesson plans for Minecraft Education Edition. Using mixed methods we examine descriptive lessons designed by teachers and uploaded to the Minecraft Education website. Our ongoing qualitative analysis lead to a number of dimension codes which help deconstruct teachers' designs with the sandbox game.

Engaging Families around Museum Exhibits: Comparing Tangible and Multi-touch Interfaces

In this quasi-experimental field study, we compared the engagement of families around two types of museum exhibit interfaces - a graphical user interface and a tangible user interface. Our findings show that the tangible exhibit drew more groups with children and that groups engaged longer on average around the tangible exhibit. The number of active group members around both exhibits was not statistically different.

A paper on the design and evaluation of the Maketec model for makerspaces. Maketec is a public library based makerspace where high school mentors facilitate making and tinkering activities for elementary and middle school students.

Social Competence and STEM: Teen Mentors in a Makerspace
Interaction Design & Children
In this qualitative study, I explored the experiences and learning of 16 high school students who volunteered as makerspace mentors. The mentors facilitated making and tinkering activities for elementary and middle school students. Using semi-structured interviews I found that the majority of mentors learned lessons in STEM and gained confidence in their social skills and ability to work with children.
