Lex Luthor overthrew him as leader of the latter after Grodd tried to rewrite human DNA to gorilla DNA. Tala released him from captivity, and Grodd started a mutiny whilst the Legion of Doom was in deep space. Luthor reversed Grodd's mind control, and ordered him to walk out an airlock. For one last insult, Luthor frees Grodd of his mind control, only to realize he's lost. Grodd is then sucked into space, killing him.
