Gemworld is a magical realm inhabited by humanoid beings who draw power from Earthly gemstones.

History

Gemworld was founded eons ago by immigrants from Earth who possessed magic power. Earth eventually came to be known as "First World" to the inhabitants of Gemworld.[1]

Earth-One

The space that would come to be known as the Gemworld was originally owned by the Lords of Chaos. Thousands of years ago, when magic began to drop in its levels on Earth due to a change in the alignment of the stars (caused by a supernova), the Homo magi sorceress Citrina went there and struck a deal with the Lords of Chaos so that she would be allowed to create a realm for Homo magi and Faerie who wanted to emigrate from Earth. This deal was kept a secret from most of the Gemworld's inhabitants.[2]

Gemworld was ruled by twelve royal houses: Amethyst, Aquamarine, Diamond, Emerald, Garnet, Moonstone, Opal, Ruby, Sapphire, Sardonyx, Topaz, and Turquoise. Always, one ruled all others. Lord Ruby was the first, followed by Lord Emerald and then the house of Amethyst. They were the natural rulers until Dark Opal arose and slew Lord and Lady Amethyst, the birth parents of Princess Amethyst. For the next 20 years, Dark Opal ruled the Gemworld, until being overthrown by an alliance of the other eleven houses, led by Princess Amethyst.[3]

New Earth

In the distant future, long after the reign of the twelve houses, the Gemworld would eventually become the Sorcerer's World.[4]

New 52

"Gemworld" was just one name for the realm; its proper name was "Nilaa". There were five major houses: Amethyst, Citrine, Diamond, Onyx, and Turquoise. Many years ago, the dark mage Eclipso—a hybrid child of Houses Diamond and Onyx—was banished to Earth by Lady Chandra of House Amethyst. However, due to John Constantine tricking the current Princess Amethyst, Eclipso was able to return to Gemworld to seek revenge, forming an alliance with Prince Zushan of House Diamond. Eclipso was ultimately defeated by Princess Amethyst channeling the power of her mother, Graciel, and her aunt, Mordiel, along with their allies.

Rebirth

Gemworld was ruled by the original twelve houses. However, a group known as The Banned, who represented other, suppressed gemstones, also inhabited the realm.
