Eric Falcon, the Soldier of Fortune was a pirate hunter sailing among the British colonies.

After the death of his grandfather, Admiral Falcon, Eric and Pancras Falcon were summoned as his heir, along with a third: Fortuna Dell, daughter of his ward. His seaside castle went to Fortuna, his chest of unknown contents went to Pancras, and his sword of shining steel went to Eric. After Eric discovered a map to his grandfather's buried fortune, he followed it to Falcon's Key, an island his grandfather discovered and named. However, Fortuna overheard Pancras planning to follow and attack Eric, so she attempted to warn him - however, her warning came too late.

The three of them were interrupted by a notorious pirate captain called the Sea Fox, but Eric managed to outsmart him, his crew, and Pancras. Instead of seeing his cousin hanged, Eric gave him enough money to flee and never cross him again. Meanwhile, Eric took the remaining money to purchase a ship and crew, leaving the rest to Fortuna.[2]

However, Fortuna was not content to simply wait for Eric's return, and she followed him and his crew to Venture Island where he was mistaken for a pirate spy and imprisoned. She joined their fight against the pirate captain Red Ruthven to clear Eric's name and became a permanent companion to him.[3] They departed each others company, though, as Eric next sailed to the colonies in Farburn to await Fortuna. While there, he discovered Thankful Marlowe the Witch Girl about to be executed for the use of witchcraft. Colonists coveting her land dressed as Spirits of Magic, but Eric exposed the plot.[4] After reuniting, Eric and Fortuna would help their mutual friend Captain-General Matthew Turley.[5]

Pacras would return again, hiring an assassin and attempting to steal a treasure map from Eric. After thwarting his plans again, Pancras was arrested.[6]

Word of Eric Falcon's exploits reached Orollo, a haven for pirates overseen by the governess, Lady Rosette. Eric pursued the pirate Admiral Swith to Orollo, but was unable to bring him to justice as Lady Rosette banned any fighting of any kind. However, after Switch attempted a violent overthrow of the governess, Eric stopped the pirate and brought him away from Orollo.[7]

While attempting to pursue the vile Captain Hawke, Fortuna was kidnapped, leading to Eric pursuing The Sea Hawk to rescue her. Hawke blackmailed Eric into performing his dirty work until he hatched a plan to retaliate.[1] Other pirates Eric Falcon would overtake included Captain Finger of the Brethren of the Black Flag,[8] and Captain Cutlass.[9]
