Blackhawk #266 is an issue of the series Blackhawk (Volume 1) with a cover date of January, 1984.

Synopsis for "The New Recruit"

Nazis invade Port Celtan, which is along an Allied supply line; Blackhawks counterattack, now including Wu Cheng's replacement, Lt. Theodore Gaynor. Meanwhile Nazi Agent Walter Schoener (impersonating Blackhawk) frees Professor Merson from Allied custody. The Blackhawk team splits up and searches for Merson in Zurich, in Beldorf, and at some of his old lab sites; that has to take up the rest of that day.

The next day, they get a clue to the whereabouts of Agent Schoener, at Vartoll. Meanwhile the Nazis attack at 10 Downing Street London, with another Merson machine, a huge metal worm (about the size of a passenger train). Not sure where the RAF is, but six Blackhawks fly to London from Abbott and still ineffectually intercept the well-armored worm, before it reaches 10 Downing. They land and attack on foot, disabling the monster with some skillfully placed grenades.

Meanwhile in Vartoll Blackhawk tracks down and arrests Professor Merson, also destroys a set of plans for the 3rd War Wheel, and warns the London team that Agent Schoener is in London. They catch Schoener just as he's abducting Churchill, and sure enough it's new guy Gaynor who shoots Agent Schoener dead. Churchill hires Merson for the Allies by offering him more money. Blackhawk decides to impersonate Agent Schoener and assassinate Hitler.

To be continued.

Synopsis for "Detached Service Diary, Olaf: Make 'em Laugh!"

Olaf travels to neutral territory and meets up with his old circus pals for a quick reunion, but Nazi soldiers show up and command the circus to perform, that evening, for their commander, Field Marshal Von Frank. Olaf takes part in the performance, wearing clown make-up.

Olaf is in this town in the first place to meet a courier from Allied Command, but the German takeover was unexpected and there was no way to warn him about it, so that evening the courier shows up at the circus, looking for Olaf, and not recognizing him. There is a mishap in which another clown shoots at Olaf with a seltzer water bottle, but instead splooshes the Field Marshal, right in the face. He has his goons drag the clown off stage and beat him, which Olaf can't just stand around and watch happen, so he steps in and beats up both of the guards. Meanwhile, one alert Nazi officer notices the courier, and sends troops to capture him. Olaf climbs to the high-wire platform and swings down to the rescue, Tarzan-style. There's a brief scuffle, with the circus people pitching in on Olaf's side, and the small number of armed Nazis are subdued.

Notes

  • Agent Schoener was earlier turned into a duplicate of Blackhawk via anaplastic surgery, by Professor Hugo Merson.
  • Lots of towns in this series have locations that could just as easily be in Britain OR France: Abbott, Port Celtan, Vartoll, etc.
  • The unbuilt 3rd War Wheel would have been impervious to electricity and have a built-in quicksand detector.
