Batman: The Long Halloween Special #1 is a one-shot with a cover date of December, 2021. It was published on October 26, 2021.
Synopsis for "Nightmares"
In Nantucket Massachusetts, three weeks before Halloween, the cell-room of Gilda Dent is plastered with newspaper articles and photos, all of her husband. One wall before the accident, "Dynamic D.A.!", "New D.A. "Apollo" Wins". An other wall, after. "Terror in the Courtroom". A mugshot of Dent. We then see that the cell window has been shattered, she has escaped. Gilda, outside, jumps over a picket fence, evading a searchlight. She runs down the hill that the Squire Institute for the Criminally Insane is set atop, towards a small row-boat at a small dock.
In Gotham, Calendar Mans crew are holding up Wilson's Jewelry. The same jeweler that Martha Waynes pearls were purchased. Inside several calendar-grunts with AR-15s are holding a few hostages, while spreading around pieces of paper with various dates on them. Two calendar-grunts are in the back of the building, opening the jewelers vault with a large machine. They remove the machine, and open the vault only to find Batman inside waiting for them, "Where is Julian Day?".
Batman proceeds to explain to the reader that for the past few weeks, Calendar Man has been sending his men to steal gemstones. Specifically they had been stealing birthstones, gems that correspond to the months on the calendar. He takes the two calendar-grunts into the vault with and explains to them that he will "work on" both of them until one of them talks, meaning that someone will have taken a beating for nothing. He closes the vault door behind him.
Later, atop the Gotham City Police Departments building, Batman approaches commissioner Jim Gordon. Gordon states that he doesn't even need Batman to alert his arrival anymore, and he already knows of his arrival. He then thanks Batman for his work at Wilsons Jewelry, and Batman responds that the calendar-grunts will most likely make bail, and that hopefully they will lead him to Julian. Batman talks about how Calendar Man is making more brazen and dangerous because of his envy of the holiday killers fame, and Gordon begins to reminisce over him, Batman, and D.A. Dents gatherings on the rooftop, before Two-Face. However, Batman retorts, telling him not to, as Dent is now a killer and a lunatic, and they probably never knew the real him. He proposes that perhaps Two-Face was there hiding the entire time, to which Gordon changes the subject explaining how his niece, Barbara, wanted to go trick or treating with Robin. He asks if this would be possible and begins to turn around, but when he does, the Batman is nowhere to be seen, leaving Gordon to contemplate what to tell his niece.
One week before Halloween, in the Gotham sewer system, Solomon Grundy is standing on a stone platform above the murky waters, guarding a door labelled Gotham Electric. A woman approaches cloaked in shadows, explaining to Solomon that she wants she wants to protect the man behind the door as much as he does. He lets opens the door for her. The man inside the room is Two-Face, who is rather upset at Solomon, as he did not want to be disturbed, begins scolding him only to abruptly stop upon seeing the woman he let in. The woman is Gilda Dent. Harvey asks her how long she's been back and she lies, telling him she's been back at least a year, looking for him all this time. They hug. Harvey steps back asking why she would come back after what happened to him, to his face, but "All I see is my Apollo..."
In the cave underneath Wayne Manor, Halloween is fast approaching. Bruce is at the Bat-Computer studying various birthstones when Alfred appears, asking is Bruce is thinking of a gift for Miss Kyle, but is disappointed to learn Bruce is studying only Calendar Man. Bruce explains to Alfred that Calendar Man is still going after the more expensive birthstones like diamond over the cheaper like garnet, and Alfred proposes that the worth of something is merely a matter of perspective. He begins to suggest letting Robin help but Bruce denies this suggestion immediately. Alfred explains though that he'll never be ready if Bruce never lets him.
