It is at the north end of the San Francisco Peninsula, south of the Golden Gate and Marin County, and is bounded on its eastern shore by the bay, and on its western shore by the Pacific Ocean. It is the most densely settled large city (population greater than 200,000) in the state of California and the second-most densely populated major city in the United States after New York City.
