Summary

[edit]
Description

March is Women’s History month, and we want to highlight some of the amazing women here at U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on our social media sites.

Name: Roberta Swift

Title: Wildlife Biologist and Region 1 Seabird Coordinator, Migratory Birds & Habitat Programs

Duty station: Portland, Oregon

Female Conservation Hero or Mentor : My mother, Carol Swift.

Where did you go to school: University of Virginia (undergrad) and Oregon State University (Master’s).

What did you study? Wildlife Science

How did you get interested in conservation? Thanks go to my mother for getting me interested in nature and conservation. She brought me outside camping and hiking from a young age and taught me to appreciate plants, animals and geology. She collected rocks and tree fruits and even taught me bird songs, some of which I later discovered were wrong! “Drink you tea” is a spotted towhee, NOT a tufted titmouse! That’s okay, Mom, the process of re-learning those songs made me remember them even better!

What’s your favorite species and why? Any kind of petrel or storm petrel: they are so mysterious because they nest underground and are active at night so are difficult to observe. They also have amazing voices and are full of personality if you get to know them!

If you could have one incredible animal adaptation, what would it be? I would fly through the air AND water, as many seabirds do!
