n Tropics presents a pleasing appearance, surroundedby dense tropical foliage ever green, withhere and there a flowering shrub or tree ofwondrous beauty. In striking contrast tothis is the Civil Hospital, which, like the cabs,seemed reduced to the last extremity of ex-istence. Man wants but little here below,however, and especially in Barbadoes wherethe necessities of life are easily supplied. Acongenial climate for the dark-skinned, thebread-fruit tree spreading its broad-leavedbranches and growing fruit over the road-way and the cot, thus affording nourishmentwith the least exertion and a grateful shadeto lie in. The chief industry is the cultiva-tion and manufacture of sugar; rum comesnext in importance. But the former has de-clined of late years under the competitionof beet-root sugar which is now so generallygrown in northern countries; it is said that,as a consequence, the island does not enjoya very high degree of prosperity.
