Summary
[edit]DescriptionPortland seawall during 1996 Willamette River flood.jpg | Temporary barricades and sandbags in place along the Willamette River seawall in Portland's Waterfront Park at the peak of the Willamette Valley Flood of 1996 (in Portland, Oregon, U.S.). At this time, the water level was only about a foot below the level of the walkway, the top of the seawall. The river had crested around 7 p.m. the night before this, and it had receded about 6 to 8 inches by the time of this photograph. In the lefthand background, debris carried by the flooding has collected around the lower (railroad) level of the Steel Bridge. The bridge was temporarily closed to all traffic for almost 48 hours, as a safety precaution. The glass spires of the Oregon Convention Center are visible in the righthand background. |
