bank, called the Bank of England, is the agent of the governmentin many of its business transactions and employs about a thousandpersons. Being a very old city, many of the London streets are narrow andcrooked. Some of the principal streets are too narrow for street cars, sothat, unlike American cities, the people have to be transported mainly byomnibuses. One of the largest companies runs thirteen hundred buses,and employs five thousand men and fifteen thousand horses. However,an underground railway, which encircles the great city, running underhouses and streets, carries an enormous number of passengers. Near London are many places of interest. Just below the city, on thesouth side of the river, is the Greenwich observatory (p. 39), from whichmeridians of longitude are numbered and time is regulated. A few milesup the river is ^Yindsor Castle (Fig. 385), the palace of the sovereigns ofthe Empire. Find Cambridge and Oxford (Fig. 384), the two leadinguniversity townf of Great Britain.
