Pontiac wanted a performance package for its Tempest using the larger 325hp 389 cu in V8, so the GTO option was introduced in 1964, it was available on the 2 door coupe, hardtop coupe and convertible. It also got dual exhaust, chrome valve covers and air cleaner, floorshift with Hurst shifter, stiffer springs and a hood scoop. 348hp Tri Power was an option The GTO was restyled in 1965, slightly longer and featuring Pontiacs characteristic stacked quad headlights. A facelift in 1966 and again in 1967 saw new grille and tail lights. Engine capacity was increased in 1967 to 400 cu in and available in 3 models; 255hp economy, 335hp standard and 360hp high output. |
