Selected Swedish churches

There are thirteen diocese (stift) in Sweden. From south to north:

• Diocese of Lund

• Diocese of Karlstad
• Diocese of Västerås
• Diocese of Strängnäs
• Diocese of Stockholm
• Diocese of Visby

• Diocese of Luleå.

Each diocese has a cathedral (domkyrka). Two towns also have a cathedral despite not currently a dioece; Mariestad (a diocese 1580–1646, then merged with Karlstad) and Kalmar (diocese 1678-1915, then merged with Växjö).

  Strängnäs: Strängnäs domkyrka

  Visby: Sankta Maria domkyrka - Inaugurated 1225, cathedral 1572. 13th century Jesus-image; modern glass windows.

  Västerås: Västerås domkyrka - Blend architecture 1200-1900; several notable objects: medieval triptych, tomb of Eric XIV of Sweden.

Norrland is the sparsely inhabited area in northern Sweden. It has a total population of 1,100,000 inhabitants. Largest cities are Umeå, Gävle, Sundsvall, Luleå and Östersund.

Svealand in midth Sweden. Consists of the provinces Värmland, Dalarna, Västmanland, Närke, Södermanland and Uppland

Stockholm is Sweden's capital, on Sweden's east coast between Södermanland and Uppland. It has 750,000 in the municipality, kommun, area. Stockholm is a see (biskopssäte).

  German church, Tyska kyrkan - 17th century; baroque; situated in the old town section.

  Gustav Vasa church - Inaugurated 1906, one of Stockholm's largest with 1,500 seats.

  Katarina kyrka - Rebuilt to its 1695 appearance

20 municipalities with a combined inhabitants of 1,000,000 comprise the Stockholm surroundings: Botkyrka, Danderyd, Ekerö, Haninge, Huddinge, Järfälla, Lidingö, Nacka Sigtuna, Sollentuna, Solna, Sundbyberg, Tyresö, Täby, Upplands-Bro, Upplands Väsby, Vallentuna, Vaxholm, Värmdö, Österåker and Salem.

Uppsala County, or Uppsala län, belongs to the archdiocese (ärkestift) of Uppsala. It has 300,000 inhabitants. Municipalities are: Älvkarleby, Tierp, Östhammar, Uppsala, Enköping, Håbo, Knivsta. Sigtuna and Uppsala are both ancient living areas with many archaelogical remains.

Bro kyrka, Gotland

Skåne a province in southernmost Sweden. Belonged to Denmark until 1658. Has a population of 1,150,000 inhabitants. Largest cities are Malmö, Lund and Helsingborg. The countryside still contains many medieval Danish churches, its exterior characterised by stepped gavels (trappstegsgavel). Inside are often baptismal fonts from 12th-13th century; lime stone paintings & other decorations somwhat later, 15th-17th century.

  Västra Klagstorps kyrka - 13th century churchtower ; medieval bapt funt; altarpiece and pulpit from 1590

  Valleberga kyrka - Scanias only round-church; oldest parts from 1150; medieval bapt. funt

Blekinge, a province in south-east Sweden.

  Karlskrona: Amiralitetskyrkan - Inaugurated 1685, Sweden's largest wooden church.

  Karlskrona: Fredrikskyrkan - inaugurated 1744; one of Sweden's few baroque churches (see also Trefaldighetskyrkan, Karlskrona)

Halland is a province in south western Sweden.

Småland is a province in southern Sweden. It is distinguished by forests and glassworks (glasbruk) . 700,000 inhabitants.

  Älmhults kyrka - The Church in Älmhult.

Gotland is an island outside Småland, south-east Sweden. Was independant until 1288, belonged to Sweden until 1449, then to Denmark between 1449-1645, and again to Sweden thereafter. The only diocese is Visby Diocese. It has 60,000 inhabitants, with 25,000 living in Visby. Visby was an old medieval town largely designed by the Hanseatic league.

West Sweden consists of provinces Västergötland, Bohuslän, Dalsland, or by Västra Götaland County. 1,500,000 inhabitants. Largest city is Göteborg.
