English: AR RAMADI, Iraq (May 4, 2005) - From the back of a high-back Humvee, Sgt Hector Martinez Jr., noncommissioned officer with 5th Civil Affairs Group, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, lowers a bag of soccer balls into the arms of Cpl. Michael L. Godfrey, assistant noncommissioned officer with 5th CAG, who's standing in a street here. The 28-year-old from Fontana, Ca., and other Marines with 5th CAG presented the children with gifts of soccer balls, clothes, dolls and wristwatches. The effort was a diversion tactic designed to keep local residents from intruding and to protect the privacy of a family there. Marines with 5th CAG coordinated for an Iraqi boy with a severe urinary tract infection to receive treatment at a local hospital. Contributed photo |
